Pizzazz

Pizzazz occupies a sunny corner spot on Kennedy and Eyre Streets, and on any given weekend morning, is buzzing with activity due to the yummy menu, extensive range of teas and freshly made juice. The island bar divides the restaurant - one side is lined with bright red banquettes with views to the open kitchen and the other side holds clusters of tables looking out to the street. The breakfast menu balances sweet and savoury, plus there's a chalkboard full of regularly changing specials. Lunch, which kicks off at 11.30am, consists of sandwiches, salads and, as indicated by the large woodfired oven, a range of gourmet pizzas.

Great food and improved service
I've been to Pizzazz quite a few times now. The service has always been rubbish - slow, inconsiderate and painful, especially from an older, ginger woman. Bane of my existence. Although, having said that, not too far below the usual Canberran service standards.

I hadn't been back for over a year - the service had become so unbearable that not even the food was enough to lure me back. Anyway, found myself in Kingston this morning, needing to fill in half an hour. So we took a chance and went back to Pizzazz.

It was busy, as usual. Which I think is a good sign, rather than something to complain about. Only had to wait a minute for a table to be cleaned for us though. The service was speedier than it had been in the past, but still a little on the slow side. It took a while for our coffees to come out but meals followed soon after. A word of advice: as always, it helps to be a little nice to the waitstaff. Saw some apalling behaviour from customers this morning.

What I love about this place is that it's got great brekkies - a little more imaginative than usual Canberra breakfast fare, too. There's a good range of items, and some new dishes on the specials board. And it's consistently yummy. We'll definitely be back more often now.

Menu confusion
In the new year, Pizzazz seemed to have different prices on their menu and at the counter. The menu said that an espresso costs $3, yet the waitress insisted on charging $3.50 because 'that is what our single shot coffee costs now.' When I pointed out the menu had a different price, she just looked at me and said 'the menu is wrong, that'd be $3.50' - didn't even try to apologise. On the weekends, the food is fine but we usually wait 20 min for a table and then wait 20 minutes for service. I would only go there again if there are no other cafes open.

Pizzazz breakfast review
This was my first visit to Pizzazz. The group I was with waited 15 minutes for a waiter to come, in the end one of us had to go and get menus. I had poached eggs, bacon, hash browns, tomatoes and toast. The tomatoes were excellent, the bacon good. All of the people on my table who ordered 'toast' in fact recieved warm bread. The staff were flustered and hurried; there was no banter. I was also amazed that when removing my plate the waiter didn't inquire as to how my meal was, given the fact that so much of it was uneaten. The transaction had already been completed, no feedback needed thanks.
