Pilu at Freshwater

Set in a renovated Federation beach house with magnificent views over Freshwater Beach, Pilu at Freshwater is impressive even before you taste Giovanni Pilu's exquisite Italian cuisine. Pilu's dishes have a strong Sardinian influence stemming from his own roots, and he combines good local produce with Sardinian imports such as bottarga (dried roe) and fine cheeses to lend an exotic twist to familiar ingredients.

The results are a mix of dishes with foreign flavours that still remain accessible. It is no wonder that Pilu scored the Best New Restaurant accolade and then quickly picked up two hats two years running from the SMH Good Food Guide. He looks set to continue to collect laudations like other people collect stamps for many years to come.

Great reason to have a glorious lunch!
I have taken my wife for lunch at Pilu on three occasions in 2010 and this place is the place to be for lunch.
A little far away out at Harbord . . .but well worth the drive.
The scenery is honestly second to none . . . . .
The food is bordering on fantastic . . . . .
The staff are first-rate . . . . . .

Lots of parking but you must pay for parking as the Meter Maids patrol Harbord incessantly.
Enjoy!

Disappointing
This restaurant is in a beautiful location.
The building is lovely, although with a sloping floor that hasn't been corrected at table level, so your bread rolls really do roll, and your wine is very easy to knock over...
The staff are attentive, even if not all of them are fully informed. "what's this on the pasta?" reply "herbs" Yes well, we knew that much!
What really let this place down for us was the food.
Unimaginative dishes served over-salted and yet still bland. The risotto con calamaretti (29) was utterly tasteless with invisible squid, the tagliolini con vongole ($27) far too salty with gritty shellfish.
The Zuppa del pescatore ($45) was too salty and rather spartan for the price. Porcetto arrosto ($43) , with various cuts of oven roasted suckling pig was rather dry, although the crackling was good. The side of chicory($9) was slimy and over-cooked.
Desert needed to be spectacular to bring us back on track, but it wasn't.
With expensive wine, this meal cost us about $150 a head and I have to say it really wasn't worth it. I won't be back. My wife's final comment on the food? "Well, the bread rolls were nice...."

The real deal Italian/Sardinian restaurant
Congratulations Pilu, this restaurant is outstanding, the Sardinian twist is authentic and sophisticated. Quality very observant of the freshness of the produce. How lucky to have a team of staff that are working on the owner's behalf, they believe in what they are serving. I should know, I am Sardinian! This restaurant gave me an nostalgic trip back home.
