Pigeon Hole

Originally a butcher and more recently a patisserie, this tiny '50s space has been completely gutted to make way for a very gourmet cafe. Chef/owner Jay Patey (formerly of Restaurant 373) reno'd the space himself, squeezing his kitchen into the old cool room. The front of house has been decked out with polished concrete floors, warm timber and retro-style vintage lights. To say the cafe is small is a bit of an understatement, but this 16-seat space still manages to feed vast numbers of hungry Hobartians with its own baked breads and pastries, much-loved seasonal paninis, and nostalgic biscuits, as well as a few soups and similar comforting hot meals.

The best cafe in Hobart
The best things come in small packages and the Pigeon Hole cafe is no exception. The smallest friendliest cafe in town. The menu is small too but exceptional. What appears is some of the best local ingredients are presented in imaginative ways with such depth of flavours. Today they had local mini washed-rind cheese served warm with fresh Tassie truffles and perfectly baked sour dough baguette. ... amazing! But there is always truly beautiful soups, like todays Chick pea and rainbow chard. Cakes and biscuit are yum and the coffee excellent. Pity its only open five days a week. Keep it coming! JWP
