Pier Tasting Room


Perched on the water in Rose Bay, Pier Tasting Room offers a view that sparkles by day or night. But with such elegantly dressed seafood (and diners) you almost forget to appreciate it. Greg Doyle's team treats seafood as delicately and reverently as the crown jewels. The seared scallops are moist, fresh and polished, quivering ever so slightly on the plate. From freshly shucked oysters to Asian-style prawns, every dish places the emphasis on the seafood and uses garnishes to lend new dimensions to the taste.

Each dish is about half the size of a normal entree, so although not filling, they are deliciously satisfying, especially when teamed with a wine recommended by the excellent sommelier. As you would expect for the price, the staff are well-educated and the service is swift and efficient. Pick something to celebrate or a day off so you can idle over lunch, and head here for a memorable meal. Just don't forget to book.

Minimal Comfort, Maximum Taste
The views are amazing and the food is innovative and absolutely delicious.
The Pier Tasting Room sits below the main dining area and you do get a sense that you are not as important as the diners above you.
While our waiter was genuinely charismatic and friendly, the service was slow and there was a significant delay in taking our order and serving our wine and meals. It was very difficult to get the attention of our waiter, even though he only had 2 or 3 tables to attend to. Getting the attention of other waiters was impossible.

The Tasting Room section of Pier matches the minimalist feel of the entire restaurant, but is less refined and comfortable than the 'fine dining' section above.
The meals upon first inspection are reasonably priced and we were pleasantly surprised, however, then the waiter proceeded to tell us that they are half-entree size.
The wine list is impressive, as is the price attached. Most wines by the bottle are in the $100- $150 price range, with the cheapest being around $60.

There is a small bar area that is suitable for pre- or post-dinner drinks.

There was no music which made the atmosphere somewhat stale, thus not highly recommended as a first-date venue. The majority of seats in the Tasting Room are along one long bench that faces the water, making intimate conversation difficult.

All in all, the food is without a doubt second to none and justifies the price paid. The quality of seafood and innovative additions are reason enough to revisit this otherwise sterile restaurant. After having a few tasting plates, we ordered our mains off the fine dining menu as we found them to be better value for money and we were craving a larger portion.
