Pier

Since Pier's opening in 1991 it has been one of Australia's most highly and consistently awarded restaurants, and is widely recognised as the best seafood restaurant in the country. But after receiving the highest rank of three hats for the fourth consecutive year by the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide in 2010, owner and chef Greg Doyle renounced the honour, declaring instead an intention to return to the simpler, less pressurised environment of an un-hatted restaurant. The stress of maintaining a three-hatted restaurant had become too much, Doyle claims, and had fostered a yearning for the fuss-free eatery Pier was before the accolades. So in 2010, expect a more relaxed, cheaper (prices are tipped to drop by an average of $10), and more accessible Pier: a perfect opportunity to experience a still amazing restaurant without the fanfare - or the price.

Absolutely outstanding food
This definately was one of my two standout meals this year. Perfect product handled with such a balance of flavours. Can't compliment them enough.

Excellent
Entree - green lip abalone was ok and it was something I could have done myself. Main - Murray cod was heavenly. That's why I eat there. Dessert - pannacotta was substandard. My wife was pleased with her lobster.

All in all an excellent restaurant.

Best lobster
Pier is a great place next to the water at Rose Bay. This was the first time I've been to this three-hatted restaurant. My first impression was good, the view was nice. The service was good. I had a dozen oysters, the lobster cooked in chicken broth and the raspberry souffle. The oysters were fresh and the lobster was amazing! It was the best lobster I've had for a long time. But the raspberry souffle was a little bit of a disappointment. It cost $28! Overall it was a good experience.

Modern Australian seafood
If there was one restaurant that lived up to the expectations, it was Pier.
On a weekend to Sydney and reservations made this turned out to be the highlight of the weekend.
Firstly I should mention that we were no strangers to the hype. Three Hats, SMH, Gourmet Traveller Restaurant of the Year and we just discovered the new cook book, so naturally expectations were high. Very high. Pier did not disappoint in any way.
The dinner has been the best that I have had the privilege to experience so far. The entrees and mains were divine, the desserts an absolute crescendo. Is there a better cloud or soil anywhere in Australia?
My only concern would be for Pier's description This is not a modern Australian and seafood restaurant (at the time there were only two dishes that did not contain fish, [not a complaint]). It is Australia's best modern Australian seafood restaurant!
