Piccolo Restaurant and Wine Bar

This restaurant and wine bar has a distinctly old-world feel, with a dark-timber interior and a bar top made of English elm and marble. It's a decidedly intimate affair, with dark wood tables dotted around the dining room and a small outdoor courtyard where people can relax and sip a glass of Tassie white or red.

The fare here is Italian with a modern twist. Classic dishes - such as gnocchi al Romana (gnocchi with sweetened duck ragu) and house-made ravioli stuffed with pumpkin and sauced with melted butter and burnt sage - are just some of the mouth-watering options on offer.

Terrific food but what about the service!
The A-list: 50 great Aussie restaurants in The Australian (5 September 2009) included North Hobart s Piccolo restaurant. What a well deserved accolade if one considers our meal. It was terrific.
Unfortunately I can t say the rest of my experience fell into the 'terrific' category because I didn t have the chance to appreciate the ambience of which others speak, or the exemplary front of house service .
Two of us were seated at a table the size of a piece of toast under the stairs. The next table was so close we were almost sitting on the knees of the diners and certainly privy to their converation. So much for ambience.
Following a miserable moment when told that byo wine was not the restaurant s policy, our crassness and unsophistication were punished by our sudden invisibility. I can hardly complain about the charm and grace of the service because there was very little of it. This is a shame for a restaurant of such promise.

Wonderful Food
I have dined at Piccolo twice now and both times was very impressed with the food. We enjoyed our meals immensely however it is a shame that the waitress came across - on both occasions - as cold, rude and pretentious. It really is a shame because the restaurant itself has a warm, cosy and friendly feel. Even the art on the wall by a well known local artist adds to the inviting feel of the room. Our waiter was down to earth, friendly and professional making us feel welcome and quick to throw us a warm smile asking how we enjoyed our meal or offer to top up our wine glass. Because everything was so wonderful we gave the waitress another go and returned a second time. After all, everyone has a bad day now and then. Our second dining experience was much the same - wonderful food, wonderful service - except for the waitress who again was cold, rude and unwelcoming. Unfortunately, although i honestly couldn't fault anything else, on both occasions this ruined our evening leaving us with an unpleasant feeling on our departure and that is what's stayed with us. I didn't realise just how important the service is in a restaurant but it seems it truly can make or break the evening, no matter how wonderful the food.

Pity about dinner
The biggest problem with Piccolo is getting a table for a large number on a Saturday night at short notice. So we went out for Sunday lunch instead.
Everyone enjoyed their meals, the lamb was melt in the mouth and the chocolate mousse cake was to die for. Nearly everyone ordered it and had no regrets about their choice. I am looking forward to having dinner there one night.
