While this restaurant may have the spur and gusto of an Italian eatery, menu options like the Aussie pizza, red devil and fillet steak give it an undeniably Australian edge. Even the decor - a blend of yellow walls, architectural sketches and timber furniture - manages to combine the best of both worlds without losing Piazza Novana's homely, low-key vibe. Serving a variety of 20 pizzas - from the traditional napoletana to a meatier, American-style version - the menu also includes hearty pastas, steaks, seafood dishes and salads. It even has personable inclusions such as Rosa's omelette and chef Don Giovanni's tomato, cheese, hot salami and onion pizza. It's everything you like about mamma's cooking, served with warmth and sincerity.

Our favourite
I stumbled across this restaurant a few months back and have since become a regular. Friendly service, low prices, BYO and most importantly reliable, delicious food have made this my favourite restaurant in Melbourne. If you appeciate authentic Italian food at very good value, coupled with genuine Italian kindness, you should try Piazza Navona.
