When labels like "Perth's best Vietnamese" start getting bandied about, alarm bells should be going off in your head like the fourth of July. Happily, with Northbridge's newest Viet eats, the food might just live up to the hype.
Classic dishes like grilled pork with vermicelli noodles or the ubiquitous pho are great entry-level orders for newbies to Vietnamese food, but old hands will appreciate offerings like braised goat and ox tail spicing up the menu. To finish, you can go even more authentic Viet with an avocado and durian milkshake, but be warned, durian is the Vietnamese equivalent of Vegemite: Unless you grew up with it, chances are you will hate it.

Scrumptious. Quality. Quantity AND Affordable!!
Phong Vinh is definitely a posh restaurant to take your new girlfriend to, it's a modest family run diner with very tasty and very cheap food. - The menu: extensive (over a 100) from Western-friendly dishes like Pho (beef noodle soup) ($11-$13) to authentic Vietnamese such as Banh Canh Cua (crab meat noodle soup with drop noodle)$11 - my personal favourite. All the entrees are recommended. - The atmosphere: decent but nothing fancy. As far as 'decor' goes, there are 2 little chandeliers to admire and that's about it. The place is quite clean and bright. Sometimes they play cheesy music but you would hardly notice after the first few times. - The service: very satisfactory. Waiter/tresses are happy to customise any order without extra charge. A little extra sauce, garnish or beansprout is always free. During rush-hour (Weekend lunch or dinner time) it may be crowded/noisy but I rarely have to stand around longer than 5 mins and the food usually comes out within 15mins. I always prefer dropping in at 2-3pm on weekdays for a lightning fast service by the owner herself - think 5 mins after ordering!! - The food: Excellent! HUGE serving for most soup dishes and quite quality. It is advisable to bring good company to share the food around. I always struggle to finish a main with an entree or shake/dessert. Oh, and every meal comes with free hot tea in a flask! - Parking: with some luck there may be a free spot (soon to be fee parking) on Francis st near the William corner, or along the alleyway right oppsite Phong Vinh. Once again, avoid the Dreadful Weekends if you can.
Overall, this modest little place is a gem. It may not be flashy like Sen or Lido but always delicious and wallet-friendly!
