A no-bells-and-whistles eatery, the simple, fresh decor is in keeping with its no-fuss, authentic cuisine. Fortune-favouring golden cats wave at you from the counter where you can either select lunchtime specials from the bainmarie or order a feast served to your table. Open predominantly for daytime chowing, the clientele is a mix of shoppers, worker bees and uni students.
Owners Ida and Kim Tse proudly provide quick, freshness-filled meals to hungry city tummies; the fact they usually run out of chef Kim's roasts by mid-afternoon is testimony to this. He cooks the duck, pork and chicken daily, then sends them out with steamed rice or lurking in noodle soups. Seafood laksa, or sar hor fun, win smiles, while the Hainan chicken rice is another crowd puller: Kim's cooking process ensures the bird's moisture and flavour remains held in. This extends to the rice, permeated with chicken stock, and the chilli-based dipping sauce seals the deal. Ida smilingly refuses to divulge its ingredients but you will not be able to leave it alone.
