Established in 1975, Mathew's Peacock Gardens (founded by Mathew Chan) has been a favourite with the business crowd in Sydney's inner north for almost 30 years. Chan has done away with the cliched Chinese restaurant decor, instead opting for a modern feel: frosted glass, pale wood and, fittingly, peacock blue decor. Though the restaurant's look may have been updated, the menu has a foot in both camps, with dishes spanning Peacock Gardens' three-decade presence on the Sydney dining scene.
A taste of the boneless lemon chicken will transport you back to the 1980s, while the restaurant's signature san choy bow - finely minced pork with water chestnuts, bamboo shoots served in lettuce cups - has been on the menu since the 1970s. There are some more modern approaches to Cantonese cuisine, however, with dishes like Alaskan crab meat with soft egg, or king prawns with hot English mustard.
