Surry Hills is the kind of area that will always benefit from a new cafe addition. Patisserie Lumiere set up shop in the multi-faceted St Margarets development in 2005, adding a little cafe to the already existing boutique shops. Since opening its glass doors this contemporary eatery has established a loyal local clientele. The atmosphere is super-casually reflective of the surrounding neighbourhood and cafe fare prevails. English-born, French Rivera-trained, vegetarian chef Buster Brown joined forces with owner Victor Hulewicz and opened an extension to the cafe in the form of a pastry shop. Think fresh pizzas on ciabatta dough, gruyere choux buns and brioche.

Service is appalling
I have lived in Australia for 20 years and I know and except that there is a very relaxed attitude when it comes to customer service here. Unlike other western countries where the customer is always right, here it seams that the waiter is always right.
With Lumiere Cafe some items/dishes are already prepared in the pastry counter and some are cooked to order. Which means that if one person at the table orders from the pastry counter and the other from the menu (as we did), you get the two meals at different times. By the time the other person at my table had their meal finished I still hadn't received mine. I asked twice about my meal. The first waiter didn't get back to me, then after 10 minutes I asked a second waiter and he shrugged his shoulders as he walked away.
The waiters there in general do not give attention, eye contact to the customers or check if everything is ok. We often have to get the menus ourselves.
We have had to wait before for the second meal, but this time we waited the longest.
In summery: Food is good but the service is appalling. Sydney cafes in general and Lumiere Cafe in particular need to serve all dishes to the table at one time.

Great cafe.
The food at Lumiere was fantastic, and very reasonably priced. I had the ricotta pancakes with sour cherries and mascarpone, which was delicious and very generously portioned. The staff were cheerful and attentive - we had no problems with service. The only problem we had was with atmosphere, tied to the fact that we chose to sit outside. The atmosphere inside the cafe seemed very pleasant, but across the road some of the residents from a lodge were yelling out abuse and throwing bottles - nothing too bad, just a bit of a mood killer. I doubt this happens often though, so I'd surely reccommend Lumiere.
