Pata Negra

Over in Perth, there's been a flurry of tapas parlours popping up, and none are more exciting than the venue opened in Nedlands by renowned West Australian chef David Coomer.

Coomer needs no introduction because, as the chef at Perth's renowned Star Anise, he has revolutionised the way mod-Oz cuisine is viewed in the West. While his fine diner certainly elicits much praise, his latest venture, Pata Negra, is a truly authentic bastion of tapas temptation. This restaurant's moniker comes from the famed black-footed pigs of Spain, who feast on acorns in Spanish forests. These pigs, incidentally, produce the equally famous jamon iberico de belotta - a meat so silky, smooth and flavoursome, it's a must when visiting Pata Negra.

In addition to a selection of tapas, diners will find such dishes as house-smoked octopus escabeche, moorish lamb kebabs mahamara, and organic chickpea, pumpkin and tomato stew with a green chilli yoghurt.

Terrific Tapas in Perth
I am a huge fan of tapas style eating. I have eaten in a few Tapas restaurants in both Sydney & Perth. Pata Negra beats them all. Yes it got a little noisy but that's tapas eating. Communal and busy. The food is innovative and a little daring. We tried the cuttlefish paella WOW fabulous. Chorizo dish - yuuuum. Desserts equally excellent. I shall be eating here again and again. Fantastic value keep up the good food.

Tapas & Wine
The hustle and bustle of this noisy tapas/wine bar is not for the faint hearted. Pata Negra is probably more suited to a younger crowd then stuffy fine dining types. Service is fast and efficient.

There are no set entrees and mains. Tapas is about sharing lots of little dishes with a friend, and drinking lots of wine. The food was wood fired and excellent. Highly recommend trying the 5j Jamon, smoked octopus, and Pata Negra fabada.
Wine list has a good range of Spanish wines by the glass, and by the bottle. Try a glass of Cava (sparkling Spanish wine) for a an aperitif...delicious!

A fun night out.

Busy Introduction
After dining at Star Anise, our curiosity was piqued to try David Coomer's latest restaurant addition, Pata Negra. First off we required a booking for a Friday night which is fair enough, but for a 7pm booking, we also needed to vacate by 9pm to let the next group in. This could be a faster than expected meal!

Upon arriving, the first thing that strikes you is kitsch serving plates (and crammed in tables). It looks very stylish, and you cold be forgiven to think that these items have been very selectively picked from many a garage sale. The black painted walls and red highlights also add drama to the dining room.

On to the meal, for our group of four we started with mountain bread, almonds, chorizo and the boquerones. Each one being a taste sensation and a good lead up to the main courses. The mains we had arroz negra, beef cheek, lamb koftas and woodfired mushrooms. Each serve again being delicious.

On the whole, the dining experience was very good. Only quibbles would be the noisy dining room, and the red wine we were served was oddly warm. At the end, it was $65/head ($30 food / $35 wine) which I was more than happy to pay. I'd certainly recommend that you gather a small group of friends and sample the great selection of plates.
