Inner West pastry fans must have grinned collectively when the original owners of Crown Street's iconic pastizzi cafe set up shop at the southern end of King Street in Newtown. A mod take on the stalwart Surry Hills cafe, Newtown's version comes complete with the kind of cheery service you'd expect from a family-run business. Open at all hours of the day, it's a cruisy spot that caters to diners on the run, and those keen to while away a little more time with a flaky Maltese staple and a strong cup of coffee.
The cafe's cheap-as-chips pastizzi are filled with traditional flavours such as spinach and ricotta, and pureed pea, along with more contemporary stuffings such as chilli con carne, vegie curry, and chicken and mushroom. The cafe has also expanded its repertoire to include sweet varieties such as cheese and cherry, chocolate and ricotta, and apple. If a more substantial meal is in order, try a plate of traditional oversized ravioli with a Maltese-style tomato sauce, followed by a creamy sweet ricotta kannoli.
