Oyama Japanese Restaurant

Oyama doesn't just provide you with some of the best sushi in town, it's entertaining as hell, too. The sushi chefs, including owner Da Shan Wang, like to have a laugh and will joke around with diners, so the atmosphere is relaxed and jovial. The teppanyaki can be busy, so get a seat at the sushi bar.

Best sushi I've ever eaten
Yes, the chefs are quirky. Yes, the wait staff can be a bit too quick. And, yes, at the sushi bar, the chefs tend to make things for you without you saying so much as two words--if this bothers you, be quick and firm with them; but I'd recommend you trust them. Because I have never eaten sushi this good.

The tempura fish hand roll is to DIE for! I like tempura, but it's never been my favourite; nor has fish, that isn't salmon or tuna, in sushi for that matter, but one of the chefs at the sushi bar made this for us the first time we visited. I've been back 4 times since then and demanded it each time! The fish is freshly cooked and then rolled into the hand roll moments later. When you eat it, it's warm and light and the delicate crunch of the tempura batter mixed with the mayonnaise and fish eggs is an experience every sushi lover should have.

The sashimi was also great--fresh fish, nicely sliced and all prepared in front of us. The salmon and avocado hand rolls and the rainbow rolls were brillant as well.

The difference you'll find in their sushi is that the nori paper is fresh. Your teeth will gently pierce through it. I've eaten in many Japanese restaurants and none have had nori paper of such a fresh quality. It will make you hate sushi anywhere else. Even sushi you pay good money for...

Congratualtion! We're hooked!
A warm welcome from the restaurant owner behind the Sashimi bar was the first step to ensuring that we became regulars. Very rarely are you made to feel that you are the reason for a restaurant being in business. Consistency of food and 100% trust in the skillful hands of the Sashimi chefs means that we hardly order anymore, allowing the owner to guide our tastbuds on new adventures on each visit. Presentation is simple and reminiscent of that which your would see on the SBS series, Iron Chef. The only downside is that my girlfriend's appetite for Sashimi grows with each visit. She is now threatening to order a large platter for herself and will no doubt use it as an excuse to devour half of mine as well!

So to those that have had a bad experience, give it another go! Get to know the owner and you'll have a teppanyaki experience at the Sashimi bar.

If this is the best Brisbane can offer, then it has a long way to go!
I was really disappointed with the sashimi, really disappointed! The sashimi looked like a dog's breakfast. It looked like off-cuts from someone's fishing trip. And it tasted like it looked, was way too chewy and left several strands of sinew stuck between my teeth. I don't know why this place gets such good reviews. Definitely not going back!

When our entrees arrived we learned that our drinks order had been missed. No problem, we put our drinks order in again and they arrived quickly. After the entrees, one of our mains went missing and the main that did arrive was not what we had ordered. We eventually did get the missing main, about 20 minutes after the first main arrived.

When we examined the bill we learned that the waitress had in fact taken down the order correctly the first time, but it seems that someone changed our sushi platter order to sashimi on the order slip after the order was taken.

A very unpleasant service experience, and although the fish was nice, the agedashi tofu was too deep fried for our tastes.

Mediocre
The food was pretty mediocre, just doesnt have that polished edge to it and the rice in the rolls and with the sushi was below par. The waitresses were constantly hovering. Whenever you paused eating they were constantly taking your plates away from under you. Three times we told them we were still eating! Pretty obvious if you have unfinished food on plates there is the chance you may want to continue eating.
Wines were overpriced, which I can understand if the rest of the food and service matches.

Best sushi in Brisbane
This would have to be the best sushi that I have ever had! THe food was to die for. The oyama handroll is divine. Yes, we ate a lot of sushi and if you have a healthy appetite for good sushi than it can be a bit on the pricey side but it is worth it! And there was no being hurried along at the sushi bar either. We have also previously eaten at the teppanyaki bar and that was a great night too!

Best Japanese food ever!
From the moment I walked in the door I was hailed with what must have been a Japanese welcome from behind the sushi bar.The staff were friendy and the food, wonderful. Try the Oyama hand roll and you will come back again and again just for that. I also had the sushi platter and then ordered another hand roll. I will be back.
