Ouzo Greek Taverna

Painted in the traditional blue and white island colours, this family-run BYO taverna in Osborne Park serves up a gargantuan slice of Greek hospitality for a very reasonable price. Owner and head chef Peter Polat has his roots in the kebab business. Having trained in his father's kitchen in Athens, his culinary expertise extends far beyond the humble doner, as is evident in his deliciously simple home cooking.

All the traditional treats are here, including souvlaki, saganaki (fried cheese), spanakopita and dolmades; many of which are featured in Ouzo's amazing platter for two. The feast begins with a trio of tasty dips served with pita bread, followed by a plate piled high with lamb and chicken souvlaki, yeeros and a selection of grilled and pan-fried seafood. Also worthy of attention are the spicy beef rissoles, the hearty moussaka and the chargrilled village-style sausages. And for dessert, who could say no to some good old-fashioned baklava or galaktoboureko? During the week, the cosy little restaurant is relatively relaxed and tranquil compared to the weekends when the place bursts into life with friendly chatter, live belly-dancing to traditional Greek music and a fair bit of plate-smashing.

A big Greek party!
This was my second dinner experience and it Ouzo never fails to impress with it's fantastic party atmosphere. Entrees included salad and 3 dips with bread (delicious). These are usually replenished regularly but last night was a little slow with the service. The platters had mixed meat skewers, slow roasted lamb that was the best I've tasted in a very long time, prawns, calamari, fish and a few french fries. I can't say that the food is value for money but it was delicious. I am of Greek heritage and I've eated at similar restaurants in the Eastern States and unfortunately, Ouzo lacked a lot of the traditional yummy foods such as tiropites (cheese filo pastries), spanakopita (spinach filo pastries), bbq'd haloumi cheese, saganaki prawns and of course, dolmathes (vine leaves stuffed with rice and meat). Over East, you'd pay $40 per head and get the lot, so in that respect, it was a little disappointing when you make the comparisons. Unfortunately, the dessert sweets were scant and not everyone got coffee. Our wine/water glasses were removed from our table (whether they were full or empty) after dinner, which was rather annoying. The music was brilliant, as was the belly dancer and the plate smashing experience. the staff create the best atmosphere. If you don't like LOUD greek music, then you won't like Ouzo. But if you do, you'll have a ball!!

Where is the communication?
This place is awesome. Great food, great atmosphere, awesome entertainment. So much fun!!

However, at no point was anyone in our group informed about the fact it was set menu, or the price, or what this included. It was my friend's birthday. Naturally I wanted to celebrate with her. However I have to be up at 5.30am tomorrow for my market stall (yes 5.30 on a Sunday ugh!)

I checked with my friend re cost. I had read an old review saying there was a set menu of $45. She had not been informed about any set menu and believed it would be a la carte. Excellent, We are in tough economic times, I had a bite to eat before I left home, figured I would have a main and be done.

We sat down and began chatting when entrees arrived on our table. We queried this, thinking perhaps they were complimentary or that entrees were set but we would be brought a mains menu. Finally we were informed it was all set menu at $53 ea. Yes, $53 each. And there was no movement on this. And it was separate billing. I had $40 on me, being quite prepared for seperate billing, or so I thought.

When we asked about having a la carte, they replied they always have Fri and Sat nights set, and when we said we weren't told about it, they said we should have known because its been that way for 4 yrs. It was the first time any of us had been, how would we know this?

Anyways as I said it is awesome fun and really good food, very hot though, they really need better air conditioning. Had to constantly ask for water to be replaced, even after turnng the bottle upside down in our wine cooler, and it wasn't cold water.

I asked around 9.30 when dessert would be served, as we'd finished mains a good hour beforehand. They said 1 more dance. I left at 10.30. My bestie left at 11 and still no dessert had been served. By 11, the last dance had finished a good 45 minutes earlier. All I ask is for a bit more information with booking, so we can make more informed decisions. I would have cancelled my Sunday plans and really enjoyed the night if I knew I wouldn't be out of pocket $53 (this left a sore spot of course) and that we wouldn't be finished much before midnight, if we were lucky.

I love Greece!
This place was fantastic!

If you would like to go out for a nice quiet meal on a Saturday night, do not go here.

We went to Ouzo's for a friends 30th. It was nice little old style place. Owners were lovely and welcoming. We started the set menu with some hot bread and trio of dips, along with a great Greek salad! Before i knew it, we were smashing plates and singing happy birthday. We were brought some large platters full of great looking food. Lamb, chicken and seafood. (My one and only small disliking was the battered calamari was a little oily). After we ate dinner, the tables were stripped down, and the whole place turned into chaos. Very loud Greek music, and people were doing to Zorba conga lines around our table. Then came out an amazing belly dancer, who pulled up lucky men from the crowd and danced with every one. We all spent the rest of the night dancing on the chairs and tables. There broken glass was not even picked up. There was smashed plates everywhere. This place was crazy, chaotic, and just the most fun i have ever had while eating out. I would recommend this place to everyone. It was an amazing dining experience. And all for $45 a head. We also had traditional Greek desserts bought out.

Give this place a go! It was amazing. But like I said, it is not the place if you want a quiet dinner out. This place is very loud!
