Otto

If you're fed up with trudging through mediocre Sydney takes on classic Italian cuisine, then Otto may be the one to surprise you, delight you and secure a special place in your heart. With its unbeatable food and chic dark wood finishes, views across the water to the Botanical Garden and Woolloomooloo, the place has been attracting its fair share of the A-list for some time now. Admirably, it does so without intimidating the rest of us, meaning we can comfortably tuck in to delicious dishes like strozzapreti, taleggio, cauliflower panna cotta and quail saltimbocca salad.

Nice
We went on a Friday nite and it was not as busy as expected as the other restaurants. Food wise, it was nice, as expected the meals were small. Cocktail list was ok, not a great range of have to admit the wine list was not to fault for. The view was nice and romantic. Although the food was quite expensive and was expected to be, i would still go back.

Disappointment
We were at Otto on the 27/12 with 4 adults. There were some drawbacks ... we had as entrees
2x pana cotta with gorgonzola ($28). Nicely displayed with the tiny bits of pumpkin. Tastewise predictable.
1x torta di prosciutto ($28), pretty good.
Rocket salad, also good, a bit poorly displayed.

For mains, we had:
Barrumundi / Asparagus ($39)
Rack of Lamb ($40)
2x Tassie Salmon ($39)

The fish was very good, cooked and tasty, but we would have liked some fancy mash or whatever to come with it. The asparagus/cauliflower sauce could have been much better and tastier, it didn't go well with the barra.

The rack of lamb was very disappointing. Not medium rare as ordered, more rare, the meat had very little taste, only with hints of seasoning, poorly fried, only drops of sauce. What delicious dishes can be made with a rack of lamb ...

For dessert, we had:
2x crostata di frutta della passione
2x panettone tostado con gelato di pesca

The dessert was it. I decided to have none, but as the dessert was served for the others and I tried some, I changed my mind and ordered the crostat di frutta della passione for $18. I can't remember the last time I've had such a delicious desert. That was real value for money ...

Couple of glasses of wine ($11-17). The Pinot Gris was nice, a bit dull. The Soave pretty much the same. Tyrrell's chardonnay ($17)was my favourite white, fresh and fruity. The Chianti Classico ($17) not bad, not very distintive, could also have been a Cab Sav from Italy.

Best alcohol: Grappa di Nebbiolo ($20). Wild.

The service was professionally good but cold, impersonal. Should be better.

Despite the desserts, which were outstanding, the dishes were disappointing. In a place like Otto we expect tasty food above the average restaurant, it is not enough to have nice garnishes. Any main course should have some vegies or potato mash that matches the meat or fish. I would also suggest to give the wine list by the glass a make-over. It's not enough to have a liquid in the glass that doesn't severely harm the food. Total amount of the bill: nearly $600.

Conclusion: It's predominantly 'see'-food, good looking, but not so much for the pallet as you might expect.

Same old story
I went to Otto around 2-3 years before my recent visit. The place hasn't changed a bit. The view will always be great, but the food and service is still questionable comparing to what other restaurants offer with the same price tag. The service was ok, I still don't understand how places can charge a 10% surcharge on Sunday but the staff don't smile. The food was good, I ordered a veal rib eye (450g), it tasted great but it was $65 and it didn't come with anything else but garnishes. No potatoes, no sauces nothing! I had to ask for mustard! The entree and desserts was pretty good.

At the end of the day I understand people go to Otto for the view, but there are 4-5 other restaurants with the same view either side of them. I personally wouldn't pay $65 for just plain steak from Otto. I could go to David Jones and buy the best bit of wagyu steak for cheaper and can cook it just as well.
