Otsumami

Situated on bohemian High Street, Otsumami is a stark, elegantly designed restaurant that largely sticks to the traditional Japanese formula. The decor is stunning, with woven ball-shaped lamps and modern furniture in the main dining area, which leads through to a raised rear level dressed with traditional low tables, cushion seats, shiny oriental fabrics and a teetering display of Japanese teapots.

The menu is arranged into small, medium and large dishes, with a separate selection of sushi and sashimi - try the kaki sashimi (oysters with citrus dressing and fresh daikon) for a variation on these fishy classics. Small dishes range from the ubiquitous miso soup and edamame to more adventurous nibbles such as salmon harumaki (salmon, cheese and nori spring rolls with wasabi mayo) and seared kingfish tataki with sesame ponzu and shiso dressing. Vegetarians are well catered for with dishes such as the sweet potato, zucchini, eggplant and green bean tempura, while their meat-munching colleagues are best served with the signature niku don - barbecue-style beef cooked in rich miso and sesame sauce.

The dessert menu is a little limited with only adzuki, sesame and green tea ice creams on offer, but the exotic selection of imported Asian beers, teas and sake provides ample compensation. Choya umeshu (plum wine), Kizakura gold leaf sake, genmaicha and oolongcha teas all make an appreciated appearance.

Best Japanese experience in the north.
This medium sized High Street restaurant offers a refreshing change from the franchised Japanese restaurants that a dotted around the area. The food was fresh and lovingly prepared, the service was prompt and friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant and tranquil.
I'll be going back.

Good with beer...
Otsumami is one of Northcote best restaurants.
The images shown on this page are of the back room, and dont do the restaurants atmosphere justice, its actually quite modern and inviting inside.
The Japanese food served is prepared in an open kitchen in the middle of the restaurant and so delicious, also the service is friendly.
I highly recommend you try the yummy eggplant dish... doesn't sound amazing i know, but trust me, its so mouthwatering.
Enjoy otsumami, its great.

Disappointed
I went to this restaurant in the middle of last year with some friends. Some dishes were nice and the presentation was lovely (although other dishes weren't so great). The most disappointing aspect was the service - a bit rude and really inattentive - like they just didn't care.

Mixed feelings
The food and the service of our table waiter was great. Unfortunately our time at this restaurant didn't start well. We called and book a table for two and arrived to be seated at a large shared table even though there were several other unreserved two person tables. We asked if we could be re-seated on one the smaller non-shared tables and we were treated rudely and coldly by who we presumed was the manager. Their manner was rude to the point that we were inclined to dine elsewhere, but we'd come for the food so we stayed. We were begrudgingly re-seated however it was unusual to seat diners who had booked at a shared table when there were other two person tables that were available, interestingly these tables were still vacant by the time we left at 9pm. It left us with the impression these tables were being kept vacant for customers considered more worthy!

Deliciously non-traditional Japanese
It was obvious the chefs had a great time creating the dishes on the menu. The Japanese flavours in each dish showed a twist. The Duck with Orange Miso was excellent as well as the tofu shumai. Who knew Japanese vegetarian existed? The spinach salad had a wonderful tasty dressing for a bunch of meat eaters, we certainly had a great time having seconds.

Service was capable and friendly which made me almost forget that one of the dishes was announced incorrectly. Drink orders were taken promptly and arrived almost immediately.

Atmosphere was really good although I do have an issue with having the strong smell of the kitchen lingering everywhere in the dining room. It is great to see a show kitchen but please install a more powerful vent.
