If stunning water views, a private jetty and a reputation for inspired seafood dishes weren't enough, the owners of Orso have added another incentive for would-be diners with the appointment of chef Coop Woodstone. With a pedigree that includes stints at The Storrier Hotel's Red Belly, Balmoral's Bathers' Pavilion, and Fins at Manly, Coop brings to Orso a passion for contemporary cuisine and, of course, seafood.
Entrees range from tasting plates to taste sensations - the summer salad of poached king prawns with sugar peas, a toasted almond vinaigrette and cucumber sorbet is a minimalist arrangement, while the goat's cheese terrine with baby zucchini, fondant potatoes and pear jelly is an exercise in pure, creamy indulgence. Oven-roasted ocean trout fillet served with broad beans and an eschalot sauce makes a sensible, but very tasty, choice for a main, but those with grander ideas could head for the slow-poached lobster tail with cucumber mousse, black caviar and smoked sea salt; or the towering seafood platter for two.
There are plenty of enticing options on the dessert menu, such as the pot-roasted rhubarb and quince crepes, but on a summer's day, it's hard to go past the homemade sorbets. With that you can contentedly pat your tummy as you look out over Middle Harbour and, if you're lucky enough, you might see feeding time for the local pelicans.
