One could be forgiven for seldom, if ever, venturing toward the unfashionable northern fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The Paris end of Collins Street it ain't, but Oriental Spoon provides good reason to set aside your prejudices and venture to this oft-ignored part of town.
Set among numerous Korean grocers, restaurants and karaoke bars (the Seoul end of La Trobe Street, perhaps?), the first thing to strike as you step down into Oriental Spoon - literally, for it is situated below street level - is the mouth-watering aroma, heavy with the scent of bulgogi as I was later to learn. The large dining area, renovated in 2010, has been stylishly refurbished with minimalist decor, with perimeter banquette seating surrounding two central rows of timber tables.
Bulgogi is a Korean marinade, and central to all things good on the menu. Oriental Spoon offers a wide range of meals for either individual consumption or sharing, served predominantly in sizzling hot stone bowls. For the customer seeking a more interactive dining experience, a limited number of tables are equipped with facilities to cook your own meal, with expert guidance from friendly staff, on a hot stone or grill in true Korean barbecue style.

Renovation update: Spoon still good
Following the renovations at the start of 2010 the Spoon reopened with more seating and slightly higher prices. The lunch menu is still great value, with the BBQ Lunch Box the pick at the new price of $10. The Baps have gone up the the annoyingly change-generating price of $11. With all the new space I don't understand why the staff insist on showing you to the back of the retaurant and a table with a sunken Korean BBQ stove which descends under the table to a perfect knee-crunching height! I asked to be moved. And yet the new wing along the street frontage was cordoned-off. Still great Korean food though.

Good food, exceptional value!
Working in La Trobe St our office lunch crew were very happy to stumble upon Oriental Spoon. Frequented mainly (but not exclusively) by students keeps the price low, and yet the food quality is excellent. The large interior means you can always get a table and it's not dependent on Melb's fickle weather. The $10 lunch menu is hard to go past. Some of my workmates routinely enjoy the Bim Bim Bap, while my favorite is the Spicy Chicken Lunchbox: a generous serve of Chicken Bul Gu Gi with rice, 2 fried Gyoza, a crumbed chicken wing and a basic leaf salad with an interesting tangy mayo. The Chicken Bul Gu Gi is SENSATIONAL and the mix of flavours is great, and all for only $9.50 - bargain! Of course, you can eat for less nearby (Don Too springs to mind), but Oriental Spoon has hit that perfect balance of portion size, quality, flavour, price and ability to get a seat indoors. Recently I finished working in the area, by which time we were lunching here 3 times a week! I missed "The Spoon" so much I've been back for dinner a few times, and am happy to report that although the lunch menu isn't available, the larger dinner servings are the same excellent food and still great value. OK, this isn't the place to impress a first date or those corporate clients, but if you love excellent Korean food in a clean, modern atmosphere at a great price, check The Spoon out!

Pretty Good
The service was quite good, and the servings were huge and at a reasonable price. There seemed to be quite a lot more variety here than at other Korean restaurants I've been to.
