Oh Dear
Table for 4 booked in advance. We were told by someone that BYO was ok-it's not.
We were going to a show at the Regal over the road so asked for meals to be fast-tracked as advised on front of menu. After placing order waiter arrived with incorrect starters then came back to us some time later to enquire what we had ordered.
When meals arrived they were not as described in menu.I ordered mixed seafood grill which arrived with aoli and nothing else.My friend ordered rack of lamb which arrived on a bed of mash-no mention of which on menu.Side order of chips priced at $4 on menu cost $7 at counter.Crispy pork was soggy and priced at $27 in menu,$29 at counter.Meal for 4 mains only and 2 side orders was $134 reduced to $132 after some arguement. We paid $130 and were told not to come back.
Quite frankly we wouldn't want to.
Very different to our previous visit 6 months earlier when we complemented the owner about quality of food and service-shame shame shame.

Not in touch with customers....
Customers beware. This establishment is now charging a $2 levy on EFTPOS or credit transactions for amounts below $15. My bill came to $14.80 and I was charged $16.80. The xtra $2 was itemised on the receipt as 'change' but was retained by this once great icon of Subiaco. I asked them to just charge me $15 in order to avoid this levy, but was told this cannot be done...I would have to buy an item in order to take the amount over $15. Shame on you Oriels...you have now lost a customer.

No longer 24hrs cafe. Lost its atmosphere!!!
For anyone who remembers the Oriel cafe as it once was cherish those memories.
It no longer operates 24 hrs a day so no 3am coffee and cake after a late night out or picking up someone from the airport and it has lost its bohemian European atmosphere.
The decor has been dulled down so no beautiful changing floral arrangements to look at and the cakes looked like they had been left in the fridge for a week (which they probably had).
The staff/manager asked us to move to another table with less seats even though there was hardly anyone there.
The coffee was generic and typical of expensive Perth.

This cafe rocks
We had the chicken club sandwich, steak sandwich and chicken caesar salad. The club sandwich was different from what you would get elsewhere. It was an open-style sandwich served on focaccia bread. The chicken was tasty and well marinated. The salad was fresh and tasty.

We finished the meal with cake and coffee. The range in the cake display was large, and the caramel fudge cake that we had was scrumptious. The cappucino was well made, really creamy foam.

The beverage and wine list was fairly extensive, with most wines offered by the glass, and most categories of wines fairly well represented.

The decor is modern and cosy and service from the staff is friendly and attentive.

Has lost its touch
Well this was the cafe I grew up in. I haven't been here for a few years and I will not be returning.
The service was slow to start with. The meals were decent sized but were a huge disappointment. My husband ordered the steak burger that was tiny and had no lid. My friend ordered the pumpkin and fetta pizza which was overcooked and covered in cheddar cheese (that she had to pull off). I ordered the gnocchi with pancetta. Wow - this chef needs to go to Italy. The pancetta was cut into thick bits with huge amounts of fat and white bone still remaining. It reminded me of cheap bacon (which it could have been). The gnocchi was a square shaped pudding. It had the texture of pudding and I felt like an elderly person with no teeth. This meal was a HUGE disappointment.

Will never come back there again!
I recently visited the Oriel for a coffee and a cake in the evening. I went in with a friend and most tables were occupied so we sat in the first available one we saw which catered for about 6 people or so. I was shocked when the Manager asked us how long we were going to be as that table was to fit more people and we shouldn't have sat in there. There were no queues outside or anybody waiting. He was grumpy and was obviously not happy to serve us anything. We left without ordering and I was shocked by the service. It's a shame that the Oriel has lost its original charm of years ago.
