Omah's Malaysian Restaurant

Named as one of The Age's top cheap eats of Melbourne, this restaurant lives up to its reputation with a selection of good-value Malaysian-style dishes. Most entrees are priced under $10 with the mixed platter - a selection of lohbak, chicken satay, curry puffs and Omah's tofu and spring rolls - topping the list. Mains include a variety of spicy Malaysian seafood dishes as well as a pan-fried duck and some beef and chicken curries. The most decadent meal is the buttered prawns, which are coated in a fragrant dry egg fluff and served with curry leaves and spring onions. Keeping in tune with its modest menu, Omah's interior is a simple blend of dark wooden seating, white walls and the odd Eastern-style art piece.

Overpriced
I hate faulting places, restaurants but this is one I agree with pltan33 s comments. Overpriced for what it is. For the price you pay, you are expecting Cumulus Inc., Longrain etc standard where staff takes pride in their service and know their food and wine, where chefs have spent passionate time being creative with their recipe and particular about the ingredients!
We had Fish Curry, Beef Rendang and Duck Curry. All wasn t up to the Malaysian standard I ve had in Malaysia. We had 3 glasses of table wine - came up to about $110. Portions were not big either. If they d had been humble enough to charge a more reasonable price, I d say they are pretty good and good for value. Summary : It s recreating Malaysian cuisine for the westerners without creativity, food s nicely presented in a contemporary decor. You are paying for the presentation. But good effort. I d like to see it continue to improve.

Fantastic Malaysian Food
I have been dining at Omah's for couple of years now. I'm an IT consultant and I travel a lot for my business to both overseas and interstate. As you can imagine, I dine out most of the time while I'm away. Omah's is a really spectacular restaurant for their freshness of food in particular their seafood s. I've brought a number of clients and none of them have any negative feedback so far. I only come across My Restaurant website last week and I thought I should write them a compliment. Highly recommended.

Good Black Pepper Crab
I have to recommend this restaurant to every Malaysian that lives in Melbourne to try their Black Pepper Mud Crab. My Fiancee brought me here for my birthday with 4 other friends. Everyone was very impress with the food. Char Kwai Teow is very good as well. Other dishes that we ordered were Buttered Prawn, Rendang, Ikan Bakar and they are very authentic Malaysian dishes that you can in the street of Malaysia. Service was very good and fast as well. The only thing was the lighting was a bit dark during the night. But, if the food is good, who cares. The host was very cute and friendly as well.

As close to home as you can get!
To all Malaysians who are craving for some Malaysian dishes this is highly recommended. I recommend their Butter Prawn, Kangkung Belacan, Nyonya Fish, Tempura Oysters, Coconut Rice, Coconut crepe & Pandan Sago. They are just absolutely amazing.. Will definitely go back for other dishes.

beef rendang - no way!
Being listed as the top 2 malaysian restaurant me and my sister decided to give it a go. When we got there and sat down - took the waitress a long while to serve us although there was no other customers in the restaurant.

The beef randang was a huge disappointment - having gotten the reviews we thought it would be one of the best around. The beef was overcooked and dry, and it felt like we were chewing on a piece of rubber. The actual rendang sauce was bland and not spiced enough like how the traditional Malaysian rendang is.

Food were overpriced and the food is way below the average Malaysian cuisine in Melbourne.

Good food, excellent service
This is one Malaysian Restaurant that I recommend to my friends without any hesitation. Being born in Malaysia, this restaurant is as close as you can get to Malaysian food. Buttered prawns, ikan bakar (grilled fish), and 5 spice calamari is the best. I'll be back.

Highly recommended
It's our first to this restaurant after it had been highly recommended to us a couple of months ago by our neighbour. Once seated, we were served water straight away and menu & wine list presented to us. We ordered 3 entrees and 3 main courses which were 10 out of 10. My husband had the mixed entree which is fabulous. My daughter and I both had the minced duck lettuce cup which is very tasty. For our mains, we had grilled whole fish, beef rendang and buttered prawns and it was the tastiest meal we ever had. We highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. In fact, we've organise my husband's 65th birthday just after New Year's. Omah's, keep up the good service and fabulous food.

You Tarzan, Mee Goreng
We eat Omahs at least once a month - whether it's a takeaway noodle fix, bk duck and silky tofu, or we dine in and bed down, burying ourselves in one of their banquets.

In terms of dishes it has all the great Malaysian favourites, and in my opinion the next best Mee Goreng after Danny Ko's (he started Penang Coffee House in the old days), plus a few unique tastes of their own.

Great quality and price, unassuming and passionate, it is my local comfort food. Shame the seats aren't as comfy - I might be tempted to dine in more often - rather than grabbing a takeaway enroute home from the pub!

The beef rendang is the best in Melbourne. Silken tofu and the soft shell crab are a must also. Great food with great flavours.
