Nu Nu Restaurant

  • Peppers Beach Club and Spa
    123 Williams Esp
    Palm Cove 4879 QLD
  • Chef: Nick Holloway

Even if you're not on holiday, you'll feel like you are, thanks to the tropical beachside atmosphere of Nu Nu Restaurant. Melbourne boys Jason Rowbottom (owner) and Nick Holloway (chef) had a sea change and moved to Cairns and their getaway spirit is reflected here in both food and ambience. Recline on oversized banquettes and watch the sheer silver and ice blue curtains waft in the breeze against a backdrop of glistening sea views. If that isn't enough to put you in a peaceful frame of mind, the professional and polished service and delicious taste sensations certainly will be. For a unique and delicious breakfast, try the 'toastie' of poached rhubarb and apple on sweet challah bread with vanilla cream. Lunch and dinner options are no less appealing. Among them, blue swimmer crab and avocado sandwiches, roasted Spring Bay scallops or pork and bean-shoot egg-nets with pink pomelo (grapefruit) and a chilli coconut caramel sauce. Wash it all down with a few fruity cocktails and we guarantee you'll come away feeling invigorated.

Again a fabulous experience all round
After visiting this restaurant 2 years ago and having one of the best dinners ever, we were scared that it wouldn't live up to the first time - we were mistaken - it was just as fabulous!

The service couldn't have been better - our waitress was very friendly and very knowledgable without sounding condescending.

At the top end of the price scale for the area but worth every cent.

Over rated
This restaurant has apparently received excellent reviews as a regional restaurant in Australia. We attended the restaurant with high expectations, and in the company of a sous chef and his wife from a very highly regarded Sydney restaurant. We eat out a lot!

Problems began when it took half an hour to get our first drinks on the table. Our food order was not taken until after the drinks arrived. We had made a 7.30 pm booking and the first course did not arrive until 9.45 pm.

The first courses were a mixed bag, the rabbit pie was excellent, the canelloni was average, the prawns with soba noodles were overcooked and over seasoned with palm sugar, the miang was also oversweet and the red emperor flavour within was totally lost.

Of the four main courses the duck was well cooked and flavoursome, the two "hanger steaks" were around 100 gm of over cooked flavourless, and tough meat, that tasted more like skirt steak, and were served with a collection of condiments that seemed totally out of tune with the meat. One of these was a broth that by itself was well prepared and full of flavour, but everything else seemed uncomplementary. The crispy skin chicken was over cooked and dried out, the two meat dishes were requested to be on the rare side, but this seemed to have little influence on the kitchen's preparation.

On the waiting side, the waiter was extremely knowledgeable about every last detail of the meals preparation and ingredients, unfortunately to the point where he held us up eating the food while we waited for him to finish his 5 minutes waxing lyrically about it. We felt it was a case of the emperor's new clothes. The whole experience was oversold. His knowledge of the wine list was also good.

We ordered one desert that we shared, and it was quite pleasant (mango tart), and we finished with coffees all around that were reasonable.

We spent over $600 on the meal (and wine), and left feeling short changed.

Despite the fact we had complained about the way the meat was cooked and had left it largely uneaten, there was no apology, and no comp of that course when we had obviously been unhappy with the quality, and also that it had clearly not been cooked as we requested.

We got the impression that the restaurant was geared to tourists on a big night out, and that the delivery was far short of the promise (and reputation).

Beautiful food, great atmosphere, great service
We wandered in as a tropical rain started. Greeted immediately, the service was attentive, but relaxed. We ordered mains only - I had the duck with radish and broth. It was absolutely superb. My companions raved about their lamb as well. Dessert was just as delicious - passionfruit trio was divine and I'm told the banana dessert was good too! Wine was spot on and the staff took care of us (including our two year old) very well. We would recommend.
