Located in a cosy heritage-listed building, the Norwood Hotel has been feeding and watering locals since the 1800s. Several themed sections are available for dining, all with a warm Gaelic feel. The spaces around the central bar are known as the Queen's Terrace, while the 'Streetscape' area is quirkily decorated with Irish shop window displays and glowing street lamps. The Literary Room holds the most charm, with cabinets of antique texts, a long wooden dining table and a roaring fire.
A generous main course selection makes up for the limited starters. The seafood dishes range from mainstream crumbed calamari and King George whiting, to Atlantic salmon with lemon aspen tomato puree, field mushrooms and mizuna salad. Spencer Gulf prawns are fried tempura style and served with a rocket, apple balsamic and toasted cumin salad.
Steering away from seafood, the menu offers such meals as linguini with sun-dried tomatoes, olives, toasted walnuts and basil pesto. A roasted half chicken nourishes with oven-baked root vegetables and rich demi glaze; while the pork cutlet is marinated with chilli, ginger and cardamom and presented with a sticky red wine jus. The open steak sandwich pleases Guinness-fuelled appetites with a mushroom omelette accompanying the beef, all on a toasted Turkish roll.
