Non La

Modestly cloistered away on Fitzroy Street, Non La proves that nothing is modest about the flavours cooked up in its kitchen. A well-patronised eatery in the Surry Hills backstreets, this Vietnamese restaurant is an intimate little gem just waiting to be found (and all of its contents wholeheartedly devoured). The dishes come from both northern and southern Vietnam, covering all manner of classics such as pho noodle soup with beef, wrap-your-own rice paper rolls and steamboat and claypot dishes.

Not really vegetarian
The food here is excellent but vegetarians beware!! I took my mum here as she is a vego and they had a huge 'vegetarian' section. We had the Morning Glory in garlic which was so nice but we were in for a shock when we asked what was in it...the secret ingredient...fish sauce.

When we questioned it, we were told that we should tell the staff if we are vegetarians. Since when do you put something under the vegetarian section on a menu then put fish sauce in it and expect your customers to know? Very disappointed as I had reccomended this place and then to find out that the vego options are not really vego is awful! Everything else was perfect, the quality of the food, the price and the service was good too but I won't go back.

What I like
The food is always fantastic and tasty if you feel like original Vietnamese food this is the place to go.
My favourite dishe are the Shakin Beef, the Wrap your own rolls, Campfire Beef and of course you can't go by the Quail as an entree ...it's to die for.
I would totally take a friend or a group of friends there for a cheap and cheerful night out for dinner, it also helps that the staff and the owners are friendly and helpful.
Very very enjoyable.

Non La is a fantastic restaurant!! The food was delectable and the atmosphere was one of a kind. I will never forget the atmosphere. I am so honoured to be the classmate of the owner's son.

The service was gracious and we appreciated that our order was brought out in sequence, as courses for the two of us to share, rather than all at once. We kept it simple and went for the basic staples. The Goi Cuon (fresh spring rolls) were delightfully fresh and chewy and nicely accented with Vietnamese mint (not basil or cilantro, which is often substituted). The Bun Thit Nuong was complex with perfectly balanced flavours. The marinated grilled pork was succulent and offset by cool cucumber and the freshest sprouts and the sour/hot nuoc cham dressing, and the dish was not overwhelmed by noodles. This was followed by an earthenware tureen of Canh Chua Ca, a sweet/sour fish soup that we ordered in honour of the lunar New Year. The soup was beautiful enough to photograph, with a clear broth tinted red with tomatoes, several generous chunks of fish, and celery, okra and other greens. The broth is delightfully refreshing, and gets its sweet/sour accent from pineapple. Overall the presentation was very nice, with china bowls and spoons (not plastic), which were replaced with each course, and a generous bowl of rice. The bill came to $45, and we felt we'd been treated to a true culinary experience. Eric and Angela
