There is a theory that the more ordinary a Chinese restaurant looks, the better its cuisine. New Dynasty proves this notion. The outside is so unassuming you'd be forgiven for giving the inside a miss - though it does offer a few surprises.
The interior is a humble hotch-potch of plastic table coverings, tinsel, Chinese paper lanterns and a Japanese fan. Metal-backed chairs are tied with strangled, limp bows. Industrial strength grey carpet meets funky red walls and fairy lights.
The menu is also full of surprises - good ones. It's great to see chicken-salted-fish fried rice listed. Spicy Chinese cheese chicken is not usually a fried rice option either. Tofu, eggplant, chicken, pork ribs, prawns, whitebait and - naturally - squid all get the salt and pepper treatment. Beef flank and pork belly can fill your hot pot, but there are also more than 20 vegetarian dishes. Sliced lotus with mushroom and tofu in preserved bean sauce tugs at the tastebuds. Stuffed and fried taro duck intrigues. Red bean pancakes provide a comforting finish.
