Named after the seminal 1985 follow-up album from thrash-punk rockers Husker Du, this new little cafe is surprisingly mellow compared to its intense-tempo namesake.
On walking into New Day Rising expect a few things: limited space that gives it a friend's-kitchen vibe, a nice collection of LPs to provide ambience (of course, Husker Du is played on high rotation), the syncopated hum of a Synesso making Five Senses coffee (and doing it well), and a familiar toast aroma.
The cafe fare is limited but good, mainly revolving around the different variations of toast/bagel and condiments. Toppings include house preserves; organic quark, quince and honey; tomato and Persian fetta; tomato and tahini; grilled cheese; and even the humble avocado gets a run alongside a serve of tomatillo salsa. If all these choices sound too good then the toast feast may be for you, which is basically all of the above plus a few more condiments all together at last.
The only exceptions to the burnt-bread-only menu are a house-made granola with fruit and vanilla labne and a cassoulet of cannellini beans with fennel seeds, garlic and tomato. It may not be reinventing the wheel but it is certainly tasty and goes great with an exceptionally good cup of coffee.
