Naked Japan

Naked Japan might sound like something you would find late at night on the international movie channel, but it's actually the name of a charming, little Asian eatery on Victoria Avenue. This unassuming Japanese cafe has earned a loyal clientele and many mentions in cheap eats guides for its dedication to providing affordable, quality cuisine that is prepared fresh and fast.

A definite favourite of return customers is the ika itame, a lightly cooked calamari with garlic soy sauce. Also on offer are the usual array of sushi rolls and sashimi entrees such as gyusashi aalad (chargrilled lean beef with sweet spicy sashimi-style sauces) and tori tatsuya (deep-fried chicken marinated in citrus and ginger). Vegetarian options are plenty and include tofu steak and kinoko bata mushroom stir-fry, as well as noodles and tempura. If you're after something more risque, order a naked bento box, tori shiso cheese katsu (crumbed chicken and cheese with shiso herbs) or chargrilled eel. In case you're still curious, the "naked" in the name refers to chef Gima Kim's open kitchen policy, where everything to do with the hot and steamy food preparations happens in full view of the diners, causing much anticipatory salivation.

Mediocre at Best
Possibly the worst Japanese food I've eaten. Gyoza were way too salty and oily. Miso Eggplant undercooked with a slop of oversalty sauce on top. Calamari was served like little slivers of onions amongst a salty onion salad (was supposed to be Bokchoy). California rolls were all rice without the avocado and barely anything inside actually. Even the wasabi had no bite to it. Service was friendly, nice to sit outside but man, that was so bad we cancelled our main course order. Will just keep on walking next time to Misuzu's on the same street.

Nice food
I have been to this restaurant many times.
The food is just fantastic and I especially love the wafu steak and yasai maki. The gyoza are also very nice, while the service is just so so, but i think the staff are friendly and I can understand they are too busy all the time.
I would recommend this little place to friends.

Hmmm
Just another local Japanese cafe. It was OK but nothing special really. Service was pretty bad. Menu hasn't changed in years - skimpy salads and often with diff taste...ie no consistency. Chef might be OK...but no awareness by staff. As for gyoza..try them without sauce, totally bland. It's the sauce that's nice but the gyozas are tasteless.

Lovely local
We ate here for the first time last night and were very impressed with the food and the value for money. My partner declared the gyoza the best he has had, which is saying something! The service was pretty bad, but we were sitting outside and they were quite busy on a Friday night with takeaway orders etc. Once we realised we had to be vocal when we needed something, it was fine, they are very helpful. Recommended.
