Naked For Satan

Rather than the pagan ritualism or devil worship that springs to mind, this Spanish pintxo bar is named after the codeword to enter one of Fitzroy's most famous Depression-era speakeasies.

As the story goes, enterprising Fitzroyalist Leon Satanovich (affectionately known as Satan) was a Russian immigrant who began his own distillery in the caretaker's quarters of the Moran & Cato warehouse. As you can imagine, pot stills and summer months don't equal a pleasant working environment, so Satan was known to strip down to his underwear while brewing - and hey presto, you've got an entry code and what we think is one of the best bar names in the country.

The decor at Naked may be an ode to Leon and his genius work - copper stills and steam pipes complete the industrial chic fit-out - but the food is a blessing straight from Madrid. Before tapas meant simply "canapes at entree prices" there was pintxo (pronounced pincho). These tiny morsels can be anything at all served on a slice of bread and held on by a toothpick. Grab as many as you want from the bar and pay by the used-toothpick later.

Fantastic!
Popped in for an afternoon drink and snack and is now on my list of favourite places!
Stumbled across Naked for Satan and was immediately drawn to the arty, quirky decor when walking in. Noticed a big range of wines available which were fabulous and the afternoon snacks were AMAZING!
You help yourself to the spanish inspired snacks at the counter- french bread sticks cut up and filled with amazing toppings eg. blue cheese, lettuce, quince paste and walnut (DELICIOUS)!
You then pay at the end by tallying up the toothpicks your snacks came with. At $2 a peice - it felt like gourmet at a super affordable price!
Will most certainly go back for more !
