To make the most of the stunning panorama, The Mussel Bar and Restaurant on Freo's Fishing Boat Harbour has its huge windows set at a 45º angle, so there's no sun glare or raindrops to obscure the view. That's assuming you don't have your nose buried in the extensive, ever-growing list of over 175 wines, scrupulously sourced by manager Chris Wade. Among the highlights are the Hamlin Bay chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula pinot noir, Gibbston Valley sav blanc and the Ferngrove malbec. Also vying for attention is the inventive menu, featuring three oyster presentations and five varieties of mussels, from the traditional chilli, to Moroccan and classic French style, Thai green curry or in a Dijon and horseradish cream. If you're a little indecisive, the tasting plate is a good option, and there's a small but more than satisfying selection of alternatives if you're not a great fan of fish. The atmosphere at lunch is bright and cheerful, while evenings enjoy a more intimate ambience.

Overpriced and undercooked
A late lunch, me, near raw scollops for an entree then the rack of veal (one chop) for mains. Enjoyed the main dish. My companion had the eel entree, a tiny portion. The fun started with her main, Salmon. The fish was very raw and sent back. I finished my meal and we waited a further 5 mins for the Salmon to reappear, it didn't. We decided to leave. $160 paid in cash ($40 for drinks), took five steps then realised I only had the bill and not a receipt. There was no way they could supply a receipt, not even a written one! It wasn't as if they were run off their feet, there were only two other tables occupied. John Cleese would have felt right at home. Never to be revisited or recommended!!
