MoVida

Oh, if only all of Australia's Spanish food was as tasty as that at MoVida, where you'll find fantastic house-made morcilla (blood sausage), cuttlefish on broad beans and wonderful churros with hot chocolate. Even the narrow, graffiti-lined alleyway has a touch of Madrid to it, and the Spanish wine list is topnotch. The space is warm and the atmosphere vibrant.

Melbourne s Best Tapas Place, Perhaps?
Overall, I have no idea what is all the fuss about this restaurant? I must admit the quality of food was great BUT I reckon that the food is kinda overpriced for a proper dinner. If you want a place to hang out after a long day at work, wanting a drink to unwind and not a full dinner, I will recommend you to pop by Movida. Otherwise, you will be better off somewhere else.

Dissapointing
We originally asked for the dinner menu (10 of the best) which we assumed we would get.
We only got 7 meals, some came out all at once and the others we were waiting a long time for. I was a vegetarian and I saw that my meat eating companions received one more dish then I did, and when I asked for another dish the waitress asked me, 'are you still hungry?' - despite receiving 3 dishes less then we had asked for. The food we did receive was not that nice - even though we said we weren't fans of sardines the waitress insisted we have a sardine dish (she subsequently chose all of our meals) - which none of us liked in the end anyway. The tortilla I had was partially cold and partially warm, it tasted microwaved and stale.
We ordered desserts as we were still hungry and they were average at best.
The room is tiny and extremely noisy, the service was unorganised (I was given meat dishes TWICE - they somehow thought that chicken wasn't really meat) and the food mediocre. It was OK but not worth the 2month wait.

At last & not let down
After booking 3 months ago we decided to make it a Spanish day by attending the Dali exhibition (a let down after viewing his gallery in Madrid)followed by dinner at MV.
The waiters were great - from recommending the quantity of food & complementary Spanish wine thru to the timeliness of the meals & the bill - & all done with a touch of humor & insight into our needs.
But the food was the reason for booking & we werent let down.
The anchovy & tomato sorbet justifably lived up to it "dish of the year" tag - a great sensation of salt, sweet, smoke & crunch.
The remining tapas & racions were equally pleasing & we left with the decision to make another booking immediately, with the expectation it will still take 3 months to get a table on a saturday nite.
But we now understand why.

Not impressed
Had made reservations 8 weeks in advance for a Fri night dinner. We weren't told we had to be out by a set time, instead with a glass of wine to go our waiter was kind enough to give our jackets back to us "so we wouldn't have to wait when it got busier", and brought us the bill.
We finished our wine before leaving - up until then we had enjoyed our meal, even though I was disappointed with the size of the Racions (only slightly larger than the tapas, but almost triple the price). The last part of the service will remain with me however, its not nice to be rushed out the door - totally ruined the 'MoVida experience"

If only it didn't have a rude waitress unwelcoming you
Movida has good food but be prepared to be served by a woman who is utterly rude with a serious complex of inferiority and without any manner. I hope this feedback gets to the owner because I have been a patron of this restaurant for a long time, have recommended this place to so many and was welcome (or not) by a waitress who has serious attitude. So do consider an alternative just in case you do encounter similar low class service.

Spanish Tapas? Yes! Quality food? No!
In at 6pm and out by 7.30 no problem!
The service was exemplary; the surroundings perfect.....what MoVida fell short on was the quality of the some of the dishes they produce.
When we dine out, we expect good quality, well prepared dishes...this should not be difficult.....after all, it is what every chef in the media spotlight are talking about.
Being served "Beer Battered fish n chip" style prawns are hardly Spanish tapas and not worth the amount charged.

As a restaurant becomes popular, I suppose they fall into a trap of becoming complacent and believe they can just continue business off the hype, however we the diner are the ones that suffer.

simply ah-mazing!
Movida is one of my go-to restaurant when my friends and family are visiting from overseas. I always have a great time every time I go there - the food is always top-notch and the service very attentive.

If there is more than two of you, I would recommend to book in advance (be warned: it will take about a month wait, at least! although for lunch, it is a bit more relaxed). Although, I have stopped making reservations there altogether and prefer to show up for early dinner or early lunch - unless there is friends or family visiting. It is pretty easy to get a place there if there is only two or three of you, if you prepared to wait. But believe me, the food is worth the wait.

I love the croquette, cecina, octopus with potato, steak tartare... gosh I could go on forever. The only thing I didn't like was the churros. The dipping chocolate was way too thick.

This is a restaurant that will hopefully continue to amaze and please everyone. Definitely a must visit to anyone visiting Melbourne :)

Perfect Example of What Dining Out Should Be!
This restaurant has it all - professional yet relaxed and "non-stiff" service, a list of exquisite specials to accompany an already huge choice of perfectly cooked authentic tapas, the atmosphere of a buzzing Barcelona bodega and a wine list to match.

This was our first visit to MoVida and certainly won t be our last.

Mo Vida is spectacular!
Mo Vida isn't a restaurant or bar, it is an experience!

It is not surprising that you have to book months in advance to eat there. The food is delicious, the atmosphere warm, vibrant and the service great.

You feel like you are in Spain, the sights the sounds and oh my God the smells. A foodies heaven with some interesting liquid refreshment as well.

We never go out for dinner these days because I always feel disappointed that I could have cooked better at home but MV is different... it is such a treat for me to go somewhere and be really impressed by the food.

Go with some friends and make a night of it you will have a gas!

Movida = pure joy!
My recent visit to Movida was, like the many times before it, a wonderful night out. Myself and my three friends had booked about a month or two before, for our Saturday night dinner (a necessity at this justifiably popular restaurant). From the moment we arrived, when the maitre'd treated us like old friends (he couldn't possibly have remembered me from a previous visit, could he?) we felt very much at home. We ordered the $50, ten course, option (is this meant to a be a secret for those in the know, oh well, the secret is out now) and were, as always, thrilled with what arrived. Highlights on this occasion included the cured wagyu beef with poached egg on top, the mackerel and the scallops with a potato foam. All the dishes were prepared to perfection! To top it off, the two waiters we had were so very professional. They did not miss a beat. Dishes arrived and empty plates removed like clockwork, all with an affable attitude and a well judged joke or two. I would bring anyone here, from my best friend to my boss without hesitation. A pure joy!

What a joy
What a joy! We flew in from Sydney dropped our bags and headed on foot to Movida. Our waiter was friendly, knowledgeable and relaxed. Our food and wine were both stunning. It is really hard to single out favourite dishes as everything we ate was exceptional though the air-dried wagu with truffle foam and a poached egg was fun and joyous to consume. We will go for dinner next time as I would love to see the room full and buzzing!

Extremely impressed
I was delighted to eat at Movida. Only having two days to gorge myself silly in Melbourne, Movida was recommended as one of the best and I was not disappointed. The service was so welcoming and knowledgable, never rushed to order and when the kitchen had clearly closed (and the waiters were getting their own lunch), we still were encouraged to enjoy the meal at our leisure.

The wine list is well balanced and interesting, offering some real European gems and some Australian classics. Outstanding dishes included rabbit meat balls braised with calamari and lemon myrtle; and cecina - air-cured wagyu beef thinly sliced with a truffle foam and poached egg. The churros were wonderful. Movida deserves a reputation for exquisite food and service, and I can understand why it's hard to get a reservation. I cannot urge you enough to try it for yourself.

Apart from nearly breaking my ankle getting there, lunch was an amazing gastronomic treat. The food is well presented, challenges your tastebuds and leaves you wanting more. Certainly a place for special occasions rather than everyday, however, worth the effort and price.

not so impressed
The origin of tapas in Spain is as a small, inexpensive bite to have with your glass of beer. Too bad then that the prices for tapas here are verging on prices for mains in some restaurants, and that it's hard to find a bottle of wine here under $40... After ordering food and drinks for 20 people we were also told to move to make room for 'regular guests' (food critics). Unimpressed.

Fantastic
We had the tapas, banquet set and we were not disappointed! The proportions were just enough to savour each of the flavours presented. The restaurant's only downfall is that it's a little on the small and loudish side.

Yum, good service
I visited movida for dinner in a group of 6. We ordered around 1 racion (larger dish) and 3 tapas each, and went through 2 jugs of yummy SANGRIA. The food was delicious (particularly the lamb cutlets and the cuttlefish with chickpea). Service was amazing. For a total of around $45 per head, we didn't really order enough food to feel full (recommend either 2 racions per person plus a few tapas each; or alternatively the banquet menu for $38/head would have been great value!!) Must book well in advance - well worth the wait!

You haven't tried tapas if you haven't had tapas here
Excellent. The risk is ordering too much from the menu before starting! Four racion (shared small entree-sized dishes) and a couple of tapa each (a delicate morsel for one) for two is surprisingly filling. Each dish is prepared beautifully and every bite is to be savoured. The solution to sampling more of the menu is simply to return at another time, but remember to book ahead!
