Ooooo......sexy!
Having told my brother where I was eating this Saturday night, he regaled an experience he had at Monza where he and his 5 friends walked out before even being seated! They had phoned ahead to ask if BYO was permissible and were told yes. When they arrived with wine they were told it was, in fact, not BYO (I might add that last year it was!), and that "no-one would have told them it was" when they phoned. Ouch! They ended up at the cheap and cheerful Asian down the road.
So with slight trepidation, we arrived for Saturday night dinner. Loved the decor, nice atmosphere and vibe, although it felt strange that the restaurant was half empty on a Saturday. We were immediately asked for drinks orders by the hostess who we all presumed was the owner.
Cocktails proved a hit, with the adventurous frangelico caprioska with cranberry juice evoking many "strange but yummy" type comments with each and every sip. Mojitos and beers for the boys rounded off the list. Mmmm. A good start.
The food was fantastic. A duck and beetroot salad selected by hubby was a massive hit and all tasted and agreed- delish. My kipfler and artichoke salad with gooey poached egg and pickled cucumbers- adventurous and yum! Baby squid; pear and rochette salad and chorizo tasting plate (lovely fetta) all went down a treat.
Onto the mains. The biggest hit was the osso bucco, described as "like being wrapped in a fluffy warm blanket". Generous serve, beautifully cooked meat and perfectly seasoned- "ooo baby"- we all concurred. Beef fillet perfectly cooked, nice jus; fish of the day (Barramundi) declared "sexy". Two of us had the crab spagettini which for me was the only let-down of the night. Too much fresh chilli overpowered the delicate flavour of the crab (of which there could have been a bit more). The coriander was a nice flavour for this dish, but most of it was just a garnish. Pasta a little dry.
A couple of desserts tried and shared. The banana chocolate spring rolls- again, the best word for this one is sexy. Lots of ooing as the oozy filling squished out of the crisp rolls. Mmmmm. Date and wattleseed pudding with butterscotch sauce declared "sensational"!
Good coffee, a compact wine list loaded with local wines (which we personally love to see) and a stylish setting.
Back to the service. The hostess was professional and technically the job was done well but service felt cold and even a bit aggressive (and yes, at times even scary!). The other two younger servers were polite, warm and engaging.
Prices were reasonable, and overall, we had a great night with really good food. Will be back.
