Montrachet

With the choice of dining at the marble topped comptoir or at the red leather banquette and white clothed tables, Montrachet offers a uniquely French culinary experience. The walls are adorned with old French advertisements set between large mirrors; the floors are highly polished and the bar is well stocked with plenty of French wines - with particular homage paid to the Burgundies.

The only real French restaurant
In 8 years in Australia, I have not found a better place for French food, I mean "real" French food and I can talk about it, I am French. Montrachet has to be the best French dinning experience in Brisbane. I went three times since the beginning of the year, and tried as well the desgutation menu. Please do not miss the Roquefort Brulee amuse bouche! A classic, but so difficult to find: I cannot resist their foie gras, finally served correctly! I enjoy as well the gravlax of salmon, the farced quail and the cassoulet. Otherwise, Montrachet is the only restaurant where French wines are not over priced, but well selected! Thank you to Thierry Galichet for bringing a bit of France on our tables. It is a small restaurant, therefore do not forget to make a booking, I do prefer seating inside.

Fabulous French!
One of the best dining experiences in Brisbane... Faultless service, delicious food and lovely wine. Have sat outside on both occasions that I have been to this restaurant the male waiter (whose name escapes me) made our experience fantastic. Two thumbs up!

Overrated
Am still confused as to the great reputation this restaurant has. I found the food very bland and poorly plated. There service was pretty good though, we sat at the bar and the staff were very attentive - though I think buying a bottle of expensive wine helps them take you seriously!

Met expectations
I dined at Montrachet recently to celebrate my partner's birthday, and despite reading some pretty distasteful reviews prior to the evening, we had a lovely time. We were pleased to get a table at late notice on a Friday night, although I was disappointed that the seating is to tight that you are almost double-dating with the couple next to you. The food was a mixture; my entree of tuna nicoise was bland and unimpressive, while my partner's chicken sausage with foie gras was delightful. The mains; the roasted duck and the rack of lamb were both lovely, though my partner commented that he expected more from the lamb, considering the stellar reputation of the previous best restaurant. The wine list was quite impressive, and our eagle-eyed waitress was fantastic; helpful but unobtrusive. All in all, while I was expecting fire works, it was a lovely night.

Sadly disappointed
I too had heard great things about this place and being a bit of a Francophile was desperately hoping to have found an authentic French restaurant that would become a regular haunt. Unfortunately, as others have said here, this place really doesn't live up to its reputation. The decor is cool but wasn't the real French experience I had hoped for. You're so jammed in it feels more like you're eating at Wagamama than a French bistro. I should have known when I booked and they mentioned there were two sittings thing that it wasn't going to be the real deal. In France you eating out is an event. You linger over your meal. You don't get turfed out from the first sitting before you have had a chance to drink your coffee (as we did) or line up like you're trying to get into a night club as those waiting for the second sitting were as we left. The food was ok but I can't even remember what I had (a bad sign as I always remember the good meals). The service was good. The atmosphere was pretty awful. We won't be going back.

Pleasant night with tasty food and great service
It was with some trepidation that I visited Montrachet last night as some reviews are hardly glowing, but on another review site I found the opposite. Five of us dined on souffle, pumpkin soup, lamb & duck followed by various desserts guaranteed to destroy the waist line. The duck l'orange was a delight and I would consider it one of the best I've tasted. Large servings with not much fat unlike many other restaurants. The lamb was reported on most favorably with one person having asked for his to be prepared more well done than is standard. So all in all, a nice night, acceptable pricing and superb attentive service!

Once a big fan, but no more
I am very disappointed to be writing this considering I have been a big big fan of this restaurant for a very long time. But I recently ate at Montrachet and was disappointed. Some of our party's meals were not cooked all the way through. I am hoping that this was a once off but must say it will be a while before I return again.

Don't bother
I was extremely disappointed with the food at Montrachet, albeit the service was great. The dishes were very bland and definitely not worth the price. Don't believe all the hype. Too bad I was sucked in by all the outstanding reviews. As a group of five we shared for entrees: confit of duck, scallops on dumplings, pumpkin gnocchi and the snails. And for mains: steak and chips (x3), veal cutlet and roast duck. The best tasting dishes were the duck dishes and the scallops (which was a complete rip-off as you get 3 scallops with 3 minuscule dumplings for $19!). I would give these dishes 3/5. And the rest 2s or 1s.

Does reputation lead to disappointment?
We went to Montrachet on a Tuesday evening in February 2007. The place was full. We sat at the bar and ordered entrees. The service was very good. The entrees came and my partner's was very nice - crab souffle. My partner's main again was nice - veal stew. I ordered the fish of the day - coral trout, which I could not finish. I thought it was overcooked however the owner said I was used to eating barramundi and snapper.

French and unique!
I have been waiting to go since it opened and it was more than anyone had mentioned. So French in atmosphere, and the food! Terry, your personal touch is priceless. The venue is a must as it is so unique and so French yet comfortable. And the prices - better than reasonable. Talk about wines; I could not read the whole selection without being knocked in the head by my partner. Well done! You deserve the weekend off after that performance.
