As many a passionate Buddhist knows, being a vegetarian doesn't preclude you from enjoying delicious and nourishing cuisine. On the contrary, the opportunities for culinary enlightenment are close to endless, as this hidden gem of a cafe down an alleyway in Balaclava goes to show.
Guided by the ethos of Bodhidharma, a monk who was said to have established the branch of Zen Buddhism, Monk Bodhi Dharma presents an ever-changing healthy menu of breakfasts and lunches that borrow from global cuisines, predominantly featuring South-East Asian and North African flourishes. The boutique delights include sweet corn and ricotta hotcakes, a South Indian tomato rasam soup, and a Zanzibar black eye pea, sweet potato and coconut stew. Of course, their specialist teas and coffees are also top drawcards, best enjoyed perched on a stool at the communal table.
