Restaurant Information
Miyako
Positioned on the top level of the riverside Southgate complex, Miyako offers stunning views and delicious food amidst the hub of Melbourne's cosmopolitan arts, leisure and boutique shopping precinct. Classy decor with river stones, bamboo stakes, lattice floor, and birdcage lamps complement a varied menu of Japanese cuisine encapsulating sushi, sashimi, rice, noodles, hot and cold meat dishes and teppanyaki. The space, too, engages various different moods - if the teppanyaki frenzy gets overwhelming, snap up an outdoor table with a view of the Yarra River or retire to a more formal dining room where a calming Buddha wall sculpture and gentle flute music soothe. Banquet menus and a smaller private dining room cordoned with traditional white screens make Miyako a great choice for business functions or dinner before or after a show at the nearby Victorian Arts Centre and National Gallery.

Food Quality: Poor and simply super over-priced. Anyone who had a decent California roll before would know what it is made up of. In this faked Japanese restaurant, California roll = 90% vegetable, 10% other ingredients. The sashimi was quite fresh but was served in such cuts that were just not right. The tempura is too greasy, thus not crisp. The sizzling mixed seafood of the main course is the most ridiculous of all. Usually, with something that cost $29, you would generally expect good quality in return. Instead, this dish only comes with 1 small dried-out grilled prawn, 2 small charred scallops, 1 overcooked oyster, 1 piece of small tasteless salmon and 1 small hardened squid. Sake selection is very poor, no Tamanohikari, no Gekkeikan, no Kikumasamue. And, if you are a veteran in sake, you would know that the sake mentioned above are among the top sakes. Thus, I ordered a $30 white instead. Service & Atmosphere: I had my dinner booked for 7:30pm but my table was not ready till 8:10pm. Throughout the whole dinning experience, I feel neither welcomed nor properly served. I have to ask my designated waiter 4 times before he would bring me some water. Funny how, the moment the menu was given to me, I was immediately asked what kind of drink I would like to have. Damn, I didn't even have the chance to glance through the list yet!! The waiter is quick in cleaning up the dishes, that is even before I have finished my dish??!!
