Named after central Berlin's historic Mitte district, Mitte Cafe surprises expectations with a menu that is characteristically un-Germanic, instead offering up a tasty gourmet take on modern Australian cuisine. As with many neighbourhood cafes in the Fitzroy locale, breakfast is a popular menu here which includes a lavish freshly cut fruit salad, combining mango, orange, kiwi, lychee, banana, pink grapefruit with mint syrup and yoghurt - the perfect selection for those tired of being served the usual cubed apple and rare strawberry that often passes for such an order. For diners after something more decadent there are pikelets with mascarpone and lemon curd or berry compote, and a crispy breakfast crumble with vanilla and cinnamon-poached apples and apricots topped with toasted macadamia nuts and cream. Other breakfast options include the signature poached eggs with Middle Eastern chickpea bake topped with Meredith-marinated goat fetta and herb salad with avocado toast.
Set in a renovated corner store on a tree-lined residential street, Mitte offers a casual family-friendly vibe with abundant kerbside tables and further seating in the green- and white-themed interior, perfect for escaping the summer heat for a glass of chilled homemade lemonade, or taking a midday break for lunch of avocado and citrus salad with fetta, pipitas and orange vinaigrette or a toasted sandwich of prosciutto, d'Affinois brie, rocket and quince paste.
