Mission

Art meets eating at this city-fringe cafe. Sitting safely tucked amid the tight streets of Chippendale this one-time house of worship offers diners a bit more than the normal wine-and-dine joints; the upstairs floor houses a gallery space, the NG Art Gallery - NG reportedly an acronym of curator Nicky Ginsberg's name.

Since opening in mid-2007 Mission has attracted more than just the local arts crowd. The bar and restaurant space features contemporary furnishings atop polished concrete floors, with pieces of modern art flowing down from the upstairs space.

The tone here is not overly serious or pretentious. Owner and restaurateur Piera Potter serves up delicate cafe cuisine, running the floor herself most days. Mission ably caters for those who're just dropping in for a drink and a light snack, as well as those who are looking for a more expansive gastronomic experience, with its later-than-normal opening hours allowing diners to settle in for the long haul most nights of the week.

Thank goodness there is a Mission
I have been to the mission a few times now. First night I went, I was back the following night!

The service is fantastic! The fit out is superb and reminds me of Melbourne/London bars! Finally something equivilant in Sydney. I am dedicated to telling friends and family about this great find.

The food matches the place, stunning. Keep up the good work.

A Mission not impossible!
Keep returning here & have not yet been disappointed. A new chef bringing fresh thoughts/ideas to a great menu - working my way through it slowly but surely! Recently had the pork crepinette which was sublime. Seasonal changes also mean I don't think I'll ever be bored.
The gallery likewise changes with each exhibition & not just the art works - very refreshing to walk in at different times to get a new feel & perspective that fits the current exhibition perfectly.
The owners have expressed a vision with Mission & NG Art Gallery that Sydney was sorely in need of. I look forward to many return visits.

Return visits a must!
Having visited Mission several times now for breakfast, lunch and dinner, I am speaking from experience when I say one visit is just not enough!
For breakfast the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon are just the thing to set you up for the day together with the Genovese coffee, which is one of the best coffees I've had recently.
Lunch can be as long or quick as you want - the menu lends itself to both with a good range of light meals as well as some great main courses. The lamb sandwich was terrific.
And then there's dinner. Sit, relax with a glass of wine from a simple list, which makes it easy to choose & has some great wines on it. Graze on some tapas then head straight into a meal that would rival a few of the better-known establishments. The beef I had (cooked blue) was simply the best beef dish I have ever had & cooked perfectly. Matched with a bottle of the Majella Cabernet that drank beautifully as it opened up. But then, I had the chocolate fondant.... I could rave for hours - perfection for a chocolate lover!
The service was great - attentive but not pushy. I don't need to become the staff's best friend, just for them to be there when I want something - Mission has the balance just right.
The space is amazing, with approachable artwork & a menu/winelist like this, it's a winning combination.
I'll be back!!

This Mission a must for the foodie faithful
Six of us dined on a Saturday night and from the beginning to the end of the evening, had a fab time at Mission. First there was a quick perusal of the art gallery upstairs - a treat for some of us who don't frequent professional galleries!

We then sat down in the cosy restaurant and tucked into tempura vegies, a really succulent calamari dish and a dip plate which was so good we had to call for extra bread to mop up every last morsel.

Mains were equally as good, the lamb shanks were a definite fave and well worth another visit in themselves.

As for the desserts, the rose petal ice cream topping the green tea coulis that accompanied the sundae was divine. And the warm chocolate that oozed out of the rich dark chocolate pudding ...!

Finally, the coffee was fantastic, which is often not the case in similar type eateries.

Mission's uber cool location in the depths of Chippendale also appealed. Much better than battling the crowds of Surry Hills or Newtown. Highly recommended.

Make it your mission
I have been lucky enough to visit Mission and NG Art Gallery many times since it first opened seven weeks ago and I have to say that it is a great place with delicious food, great atmosphere, friendly staff and beautiful paintings. I am so impressed with the concept and what they have achieved so far. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the staff are so attentive to your needs, the food is thoughtfully prepared and cooked to perfection and the service is excellent. Overall it is a wonderful dining and art experience. One of the best new hip restaurant bars in town. I highly recommend it. Make it your mission - 5 stars.

Not a mission I care to repeat!
Had dinner here Saturday night. The experience was less than pleasant. The food was ok, especially when you take price into consideration, however the service couldn't have been any colder or any less disinterested.

When we made our booking there was only one other booking noted in the book, we assumed that we would probably get a fairly decent table...it was not to be. We were seated way at the back of the restaurant, next to the toilet, which meant we had people squeezing by us all night.
However, back to the food & service. It took what seemed an eternity for our orders to be taken & then even longer for our entrees to arrive (both of which were the French onion soup, which one assumes isn't made to order!).

Our main took another good long while to arrive, this was the eye fillet with garlic and herb mash, caramelized red onion and wild mushroom. The fillet was cooked well & the caramelized red onion was divine, but the mash was dry, bland & tasteless.

I need to mention here, that at no point did our waitperson ask us how our meal was, or speak to us at all except to ask us what we wanted to order. When delivering our food she placed it in front of us (without looking at us) & walked away before we even had a chance to say 'thanks'.
It took forever for our plates to be cleared away after our main & about 20 minutes before our waitperson decided to ask if we wanted dessert.
Dessert was nice but not exceptional.
I really can't emphasis how appalling, distant & cold the service was, for this reason alone we will never return to this establishment, which is a shame as the food has potential.
