Giving a new look to a sentimental favourite, Guy Grossi has revamped this fine diner with inspired interiors by architect Peter Elliot and colourful murals from artist Mirka Mora. The menu is cleverly continental, mixing French snails with Russian eggs.

Gourmet Traveller Feature Review - "A St Kilda stalwart re-opens with a fresh face and a nostalgic "Continental" menu. It's Mirka at Tolarno Hotel and its custodian is leading Melbourne restaurateur Guy Grossi. "

Food questionable?? Service...stuffy...
Our group of 8 were not impressed with over salty "coffin bay"oysters which we were told was exactly the way they were meant to be? We were then offered an alternative which they charged us for... Not complimentary considering we were not given a choice of replacement entree??? Very cheeky! Then the fish of the day was served once again over the top salty as well as the calamari which was also served over salted? Other meals were good though the ones which weren't spoilt the experience. Service staff insisted that things were normal? Sorry...never again. Just not good enough!

Wonderful - one of our favourites
The food was brilliant (we had the salami entree special, rabbit & duck for mains with the truffle mash potato) - excellently cooked and beautifully presented. Our waiters were very attentive and we were never left without bread, water or wine. Atmosphere was lovely - loud enough that you could talk normally without worrying your neighbours would overhear everything, but not too loud. Wine is a bit pricy but the food more than makes up for it in value.

Great food - shame about the staff !
Whilst our group enjoyed a wonderful meal, the service was TERRIBLE. Our main meals came to the table at different times; trying to get the attention of a waiter for drinks service was very difficult; they insisted on serving $10 bottles of sparkling min water to the table, despite being asked repeatedly for still tap water (despite spending a significant amount as a total table $1K). We had friends dining at other tables on the night, who confirmed similar experience the next day.

Mirka at Tolarno
We made a late reservation and sat in the Gallery which was quieter and more to my taste than the crowded main restaurant. The red walls of Mirka's original studio are lined along one side with photos but I confess to not looking closely to see who they were of. I found the Tuscan onion soup over flavoured with balsamic but still quite palatable. Not comparable to French onion soup. The duck parfait: also quite sweet because of the masala with an apple jelly, baby beetroot and tsippets (little squares of toast was near to devine - just a little too sweet). Chateaubriand was a fine peace of meat cooked exactly as we requested. Served with a rather loose brown sauce (and I don't think it was larded) it was excellent. It came with a good serve of lightly cooked green beans, baby turnips, onion and slightly raw peeled kipfler potatoes. Dessert of chocolate souffle and sherry ice cream could not have been better. Bread was dry but crutini were readily available with olives when we arrived. Wines by the glass are reasonable, roughly $8 - $14. Prices generally are in the upper range of better than average restaurants. All in all it's good but short of being excellent.
