Minimo is one of those places that seems kind of unassuming but has you walking out a few hours later feeling seriously impressed. Sort of like a Woody Allen film or, for the unrefined among you, like a New Kids on the Block concert.
For one, they offer dishes such as shepherd's pie - that's right, the peasant dish your mum made when she couldn't be bothered slaving over the stove. Only here it's kind of cool. And they don't cheat with tomato sauce either - instead of the $2-a-bottle treatment that you might get elsewhere, dishes are served with tomato chutney that really tickles your tastebuds. Home staples such as the humble sausage roll have also been given a bit of a makeover and a cabinet of healthy-looking goodies are available for an oven reheat.
The breakfast menu is augmented by a number of blackboard specials, and while scrambled eggs are a notable no-show, Claudio's eggs (free range for those with a conscience) and cannellini beans do go some lengths towards making up for it.
It hasn't set out to be the trendiest place on the block, which is part of its charm. The service is impeccably friendly and great care is taken to ensure that customers walk away happy - which means, in turn, they're no doubt going to be happy to return. For summer, watch out for the special new summer breakfasts.
