With the wave of trendy, inner-city restaurants and cafes in full swing, it's a rare treat to come across an eatery with down-to-earth antiquity. Luckily, Millies Restaurant and Bar has just that. Located one kilometre outside the city centre, it's set within the old Canberra Rex Hotel and attracts those craving simple, bistro-style meals. Started in the early '60s, the menu leans towards modern Australian cuisine with selected international dishes. Regulars will tell you that the steaks, pastas and salads are a staple on the menu and that the signature surf 'n' turf - a steak topped with a selection of seafood - is a must-have for first timers. Mains are generally priced around $19 with generous, flavoursome servings. And as for the decor, punters needn't fear. The restaurant's low key yet elegant dining space matches the easiness of Millie's tried and tested menu. As the old saying goes, some things only get better with age.
