Milk and Honey

Milk and Honey is a breath of fresh air to Canberra dining, confirmed by their Best New Restaurant gong at the 2005 Restaurant and Catering Awards. The soy chicken drumsticks with chilli lime and mint dipping sauce are already a favourite; while wok-tossed chilli sea salt Balmain bugs and prawns on papaya salad with lime tempt further. The shared food concept enables diners to experience diverse flavours and dishes as well as being a fun eating experience. Over 60 bottles of wine comprise the impressive selection featuring high quality Australian and NZ wines, along with a handful of interesting European wines. The list changes weekly to reflect the expert personal taste of the owners. With more than 20 cocktails on offer, as well as exotic breakfast drinks, all tastes are catered to. The retro-inspired decor uses rich browns and bright oranges, combined with highbacked velvet bench seats and leather chairs. The relaxed atmosphere belies the quality of food and drink, and the feeling is one of a little bit of Sydney or Melbourne - in Canberra.

Close to perfect
We made reservations and turned up on time. I've found that this courtesy is nearly always returned as excellent service and this proved to be the case with Milk and Honey. Our waiter was efficient and knowledgeable without being the least bit intrusive. A side order of "a simple wedge of iceberg lettuce" was not something I would have ordered, but this recommendation turned out to be the perfect foil to the pasta and steak mains that we had chosen.

A quick query with the waiter about the extensive wine menu also yielded a pleasant surprise. I couldn't really fault the food in comparison with Sydney and Melbourne restaurants in this price range, and there was plenty of variety in the menu to warrant return visits.

I don't know what to make of the so-so reviews I've read. Our dining experience here was close to perfect.

Canberra dining despondency
In the latest in a growing line of underwhelming dining experiences in Canberra, staff at the nearly-empty milk and honey sat us down before letting us know about the $60 a head Valentine's Day set menu. Given it was so quiet, we thought that asking how we wanted the fillet steak main cooked would not have been too much to ask, but it was: we both got very well done, and sides that were smaller than the small steak. Coffee arrived long before the strawberries and cream dessert advertised on the menu that wasn't so much strawberries and cream as it was some kind-of-strawberry-flavoured gelatine. And to end the night, when we went to pay the bill (because we'd given up waiting for staff who had stopped coming out even though it was not even 9.00pm), we had the grand total of $2.50 a person was knocked off the bill for declining the balmain bugs as the first entree. I've only one thing to say to milk and honey management: try harder!

slow service for some
I was happy with both the speed of service and the quality of the coffe, but it beat the cake I ordered out by 5 minutes, so I couldn't eat them together as I wanted.
The general buzz is nice, but the staff can seem distracted from actually serving.

Not bad for a leisurely Sunday breakfast
We went to Milk and Honey yesterday for breakfast and it was extremely busy, which meant we had to dine outside. This would have been OK if not for the smoking diner immediately behind me who spared his fellow diners the smell by wafting it near me. (Not necessarily a criticism of M&H but the fact people are allowed to smoke in an area designated as a restaurant area.)
We had to wait about 15 minutes for the food (not bad considering how busy they were), but that was taken up reading the Sunday paper and enjoying our coffee and juice. We ordered the corn cakes with salmon and spinach, and the gypsy breakfast (tomato, chorizo, cannellini beans, spinach, and poached egg on toast). The food was good, although the creme fraiche with the corn cakes was slightly sweet, which we weren't expecting.

Won't need to eat there again
I'm of the opinion that if you think you're selling food then you should know food. Spelling mistakes on the menu are the first indication that you either don't know or you couldn't be bothered or both. I ordered a shrimp pasta that ended up arriving with Parmesan cheese on it. Firstly, no where on the menu did it say this meal comes with cheese (I cannot eat cheese) and secondly, anyone with a vague knowledge of food combinations knows Parmesan cheese and seafood are a no-no. The pasta was overcooked. The service was fine.

a little improvement, but still good
I came here for a lunch with friends and we must have caught one of the staff on a bad day, as she didn't seem too pleased to see us. Fortunately, another guy served us for lunch and he was pretty good at keeping our spirits high.
The menus are a little limited between asian style seafood and italian pastas, steaks, but we still found something tasty.
I did quite enjoy mine, but I did hear that one our tables dishes was a little needing of flavour.
Overall, I enjoyed it, and wished I had time for dessert too.

Surly staff, below average service, good food
I went to Milk and Honey yesterday for breakfast and it sucked! Once again!

my dining companion ordered a chai latte and I ordered coffee. Mine was good, but his was luke warm and you could see the mound of powder down the bottom where they hadn't stirred it in.

He ordered the gypsy's breakfast with extra bacon and I ordered toast.

His meal (which is beans, spinach, chorizo and egg on toast) came out 5 minutes before my toast. Yep, that's right. How long does toast take?!?! Then, just as we finished up, the waitress (who was the most sour chick ever) brings out a side dish of bacon. What the hell?!?! Like seriously. She didn't even act friendly. Fair enough no one should be expected to smile all the time, but she was ridiculous. She was almost angry with us for being there... service always leaves a lot to be desired, but the food is good! Quite the conundrum!!!

Accommodating and delightful
Our group of 6 came here for dessert. It was a Saturday night, and the place was quite full and we hadn't booked, however they were more than happy to accommodate us. The desserts were great - everyone was happy, and the prices were reasonable.

Due to the day/time, it was a bit tricky to have a good conversation, and the waitstaff were a bit overworked- or just uninterested.

Have eaten in Melbourne (the best) and spent five years finding nice places in Sydney, moved to Canberra and everyone we asked spoke highly of this cafe but my partner and I are dissapointed. The atmosphere is nice and the layout beats most cafes. The service is terrible because they are so disorganised. They had to go to another cafe to get sweetener. I think that sums it up.

I took two visiting Melbournians to Milk and Honey to show them that we have good cafes too. Unfortunately, it was embarrassing. The food was good but the service was terrible. We waited at the table for ages before eventually asking for some menus. Once we started to interact with our waiter, she gave us the impression she'd rather be somewhere else. It seemed a hassle to even speak! Not very pleasant. On a positive the food was good. But not good enough to outweigh the attitude.

busy but relaxed
I have walked past Milk and Honey a number of times and only through chance was invited to a mid year christmas party. The service was great, they couldn't do enough for us even accommodating my young son and the food was great. Atmosphere was busy but friendly and relaxed. Overall a great night, well done.

Brilliance
I disagree completely with some of the later reviews for Milk and Honey. I have not had a problem at all with the service and the food has always been exceptional. The only negative I have to say about Milk and Honey is the atmosphere of some of the surrounding cafes, however they have no control over this so all I can say if good work and good luck.

Really, really slow
I wanted somewhere casual with good food and tried Milk and Honey for the third time. I previously enjoyed the food so was game to go back.
The wait staff mixed the orders up on every table around us, forgot every third thing and didn't know basics about offering service. I did still enjoy the meal once it came, but my wife was less than impressed with hers.

What happened?
While the service was fine on this particular night my friends and I were disappointed. The coffee tasted burnt, the coke was flat, the cake was mediocre. Milk and Honey used to be a cafe we could rely on for after dinner treats. What happened?

Great for drinks/ dessert
I recently had post-dinner drinks and dessert at Milk and Honey and I agree with some other reviews on this site - the drinks/ sweets were really lovely and the range was great but the service was a little lax and the tables were so crammed in so a private conversation was hard!

Good food. Bad service.
The food was not all that bad (despite being a tad overpriced for what you actually get). But my memories of this little place will not be good as the service staff were terrible! Really unhelpful and all of them acted as though they did not want you there.

There are plenty of better options just around the corner.

Wonderful service and food
I was highly impressed by the service of these young waiters and waitresses. The food was just superb - interesting and imaginative. The staff created a warm and friendly atmosphere. But I must say I was shocked to see the owner of the place belittle one of the waitresses in front of customers...

Misguidedly edgy
This bustling eatery in Civic is great for brekky or catching up with friends for a quick coffee or snack. It's so densely packed and its seating so impractical that longer meals can be quite laborious. The food is interesting and innovative, but the waitstaff are consistently neglectful and misguidedly edgy. There are better, less hyped-up places to spend your hard-earned cash.
