The country's recent fascination with all things food, while creating a whole new breed of food snobs, has had something of a positive effect on the standard of dishes served up at even the most unexpected places.
The club meal was once little more than a choice between surf'n'turf and chicken schnitzel, but now, as places like Mike's Seafood Bar & Grill prove, you could be starting with duck, leek and shiitake spring rolls with hoisin sauce, followed by wild barramundi with ginger and shallots.
This modern brasserie, part of the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Club, still maintains the reasonable prices you might associate with club dinners back in the day, with plenty of meal specials, including a lobster deals or freshly shucked oysters.
