Fresh is the theme at Michelino's, where fresh pesto, chilli herb breads and calzone as well as fiorentina gourmet pizzas - topped with blanched spinach, fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and fetta - are baked to order in a woodfired oven. The fragrant smell of bread baking is sure to fire an appetite for mains which range from home-made pasta, risottos and soups to the mains which mainly revolve around seafood, veal, beef and chicken - grilled, crumbed, sauteed and baked in all manner of delightful Italian combinations. Filetto con formaggio - a chargrilled tender eye fillet topped with melting camembert and rosemary sauce - is sure to impress as is the extensive wine list, pleasant outdoor seating and diner-style indoor booths. Although set just outside of Lygon street's Little Italy, racing car pictures adorn the walls and small ornamental trees line the al fresco dining area in true Italian style.

A wonderful surprise visit
Being downtown Melbourne after the Derby and struggling to find a decent restaurant to eat saw us take a quick taxi ride to Carlton. We were dropped off outside Michelino's in a pure stroke of luck. No problems getting a table , staff very friendly , food absolutely superb especially the triple platter of pasta and excellent value as well Paid the highest compliments to the chef and the host was an absolute gentlemen who also shared our passion for Rugby League Don't pass on the opportunity to try out this place you won't be disappointed.

Michelino's not as good as I expected
Got seated pretty quickly but waited 5 mins with no menu and not even a sight of a waiter/waitress near our table. After requesting menus, then had a good wait for 40 mins for our food to come.
The pasta was good! Tasted like freshly made pasta and lightly pan fried calamari was also appetising. Caesar salad was a bit on the odd side as the bed of lettuce were not fresh and last of all the woodfired pizza was lacking in quality and quantity of ingredients for the price we are paying.

Michelino's fabo!
Michelino's has recently come under new management and, from my experience there, it is set to be reborn as "the place to be". With a new chef in the kitchen, the food was exceptional. Everything clearly fresh, made to order and more than filling. A few updates are needed to the interior, but as that happens, Michelino's will definitely be a favourite for me.
