Mezethes Greek Taverna

Kalimera! The Spandonis family invite you to their restaurant for a genuine Greek experience. Despite its large size, you will feel right at home here as you are served up a tasty series of small but generous dishes. The signature dish is the chicken Corfou, a tender breast filled with seasonal seafood, poached in white wine and creamy Tasmanian mussel sauce. And the first time you try their smoky saganaki - kefalograviera cheese char grilled to perfection - you will wonder where it has been all your life.

But the spectacular food is not the sole reason for visiting Mezethes. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, as only a family establishment can be. Feel free to partake in a little Greek 101 via the guidelines available on the tables and see if you can order an affogato before the night is through! On Fridays and Saturdays, the nights get even more fun with live Greek music. This always proves a popular occasion so booking weeks ahead is advisable.

Strictly OK
I ordered the house special barbecued octopus but it wasn't as great as it was made out to be. Kalamari was chewy. The only only solace was the variety of dips offered. Overall the prices were steep as the food didn't live up to the expectations. The service was too slow. The music was very loud to hold a decent conversation. Will think twice before planning a visit here again.

Morning Glory
Breakfast at Mezethes was the suggestion this week and it turned out to be a winner. Was made feel welcome as we walked through the door with greeting from staff. Sat down at table and was seen to more or less striaght away, ordered coffes and asked for more time to look at menu. Coffes came and food order was taken French Toast for wife and Eggs Benidect for me. The food arrived in good time and Wow what a taste very lovely. Service was excellent and staff friendly, will return as experince enjoyable along with food of a high standard

Poor experience
Like most travelers, I have had good and bad dining experiences. The good restaurants stand out as memorable experiences while the poor ones are largely forgotten. Mezethes Greek in Hobart is one of the poor experiences I'll not soon forget since it ranked as one of the worst restaurant experiences I'd encountered.

I had bad vibes when I arrived there, but decided to disregard then.

First off when we arrived around 7 pm the restaurant was pretty full, although there were a a few empty tables. The manager was adamant that the tables were booked and we had to occupy the outdoor tables.

Unlike some good restaurants, Mezethes didn't see fit to provide outdoor heaters. It was about about 10-12 degrees outside and we were all freezing. Virtually every other restaurant in the vicinity provided heating for outdoor diners. This alone
showed a disrespect for the comfort of customers.

We ordered three entrees and a main. An hour later the entrees arrived. Freezing, we ate them quickly.

Tow hours after we ordered (at 9 pm) the main hadn't arrived. Meanwhile, the family across from us had arrived about 45 minutes earlier and got their food.

The first of the three entrees was saganaki Although decent, it lacked the classic alcohol-touched flavour.

the second entree was the dolmades, which were bland and more or less tasteless. I wondered whether they came from a can.

the thord entree was a lamb meatball was turned out to be way too sweet. It tasted like a meatball and donut rolled into one.

By 9 pm I had it and told the waiter we were leaving without the main. Just add up the bill. To his credit, the waiter was accommodating. I commented to the manager how badly run the restaurant was run and all he could do was smile at me. In his eyes I saw that he could care less.He did take the wine off as a consolation. In the end, ordinary food and crappy service.

by the time we left at 9 pm we were freezing and starved. In the end, we ended up buying a pizza and taking it home.

Good restaurant
This restaurant has been consistently good. The food is of exceptional quality, the service consistently high and efficient. Heaps of options on the menu as well as vegetarian options. With regard to jdublin's comment, the manager of the restaurant is correct - the toilet facilities are part of the Salamanca Arts Centre. There is nothing that the restaurant can do - although not the most appealing toilets they are at least clean and functional. I also don't think that the restaurant should be judged by this at all and is such a small thing in the total experience of a restaurant. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

As good as the last time
I read the review by Jdublin and almost didn t go back,
I'm glad I stuck to my memories and decided to go back with my dear old mum for her birthday along with my wife and brother.

We started out with a range of dips, an olive and sun dried tomato tepenade and a lovely potato and garlic number (Skordalia). We shared a big range of entrees so that we could get a good taste for the place as my mother and brother had never been before. The BBQ Octopus (Oktapodi Sti Skara) was as good as I remember, the stuffed mushrooms (Manitaria Gemista) were and absolute hit, the pan fried saganaki reminded me of a mariscada( Spanish Shellfish Stew) I used to have at an old haunt of mine. We tried a few other things along the way but I can't remember them all. I'm a real savoury buff but deserts were a treat, my wife had the classic baklava and I had an affogato which was just the thing to finish a great night. All in all the food was well rounded with good solid flavours that fill the mind long after the taste buds have finished their treat. The service was friendly but we had finished our first bottle of wine for nearly half an hour before we were asked if we would like another, the food service was well timed for such a busy night and the guitar that filled the room was enough to give the room atmosphere without being detrimental to our tables conversation.

Don't Bother
The food was ok (when it eventually arrived??) but the staff & facilities were very poor!
Not only did the waitress seem less than interested in serving us, but she also stunk of cigarette smoke, which isn't good when you have to lean across people who are eating!
The toilets also let them down. They were very poor condition & unclean.
We did ask to speak to the manager to tell him about the service (we did mention that we knew they were very busy, but we thought we should just let him know) & also the poor conditions of the bathrooms!
We were promptly told the bathrooms do not belong to them (we did have to go out a sort of back door to find them), but they are however the only facilities they provide? He did not seem too concerned about the fact they were disgraceful or indeed the poor service!
He offered little in the way of an apology & to top it off, we were over-charged? My advice, don't bother. There are plenty of other restaurants to spend your hard earned money in!
