Repeat after me: Mexican cuisine is so much more than tacos and nachos. Thankfully, Mexicali Rose is one of the few places that realises this and serves up a wonderful array of south-of-the-border dishes. And after a recent expansion, the restaurant that's been faithfully serving up those delicacies for 30 years now boasts a Mexican bar, which is proving to be a popular spot for pre- or post-dinner margaritas. The restaurant's interior is quaint and cosy, with just the right amount of Mexican kitsch to provide a homely, fun atmosphere.

Pity about the service.
Food was what I expected for Mexican, decent but not fabulous. The service was slow and for most of the night our table was ignored once the mains came out. No offer for refills on drinks, coffees or dessert. This is a shame as we ended up leaving and walking down the street to get it elsewhere. Will definitely rethink about holding an upcoming function there for fear of slack, apathetic service again. Atmosphere was good, lots of people.

Nice Place, Good Food
After reading the reviews on here, me and my partner went for dinner. The place was really nice, except the tables are pretty close to the other patrons! The service was excellent and waitresses were very friendly and attentive.
The food was good, but wasnt the best. I got the chicken burrito which was nice, but could of had more flavour. My partner got chili con carne special meal and it was probably the best thing as it came with rice and was a large serving. whereas the burrito was on a really small plate and it was hard to try to not spill the lettuce! we also got the mexicali apparently favourite meal there, and it was disgusting! It looked abit off at first as it was a black tortilla, but the taste was really yuck! We also got a mandarine salad to share and this was really yum!
Overall, the service and atmosphere was probably the best thing, but the food was average.

Saturday night dinner
Went for dinner around 7.30pm last night, the place was busy but since we had a reservation we were seated right away.
Service was a bit on the slow side (since it was busy), but in a way it worked out because the servings are huge and it gave you time to digest in between courses. Plenty of vegetarian options available, the food is good and very filling.

Lovely Mexican
I found the food great and the portions generous at this eatery. The service from the staff was good also. Would recommend this place for Mexican food.

Tasty Mexican
If you want Mexican in Melbourne this place is a good choice. The food isn't too greasy, or "tex-mex". We booked as a group and everything arrived quickly. The meals were good, and we ordered a jug of sangria which went down a treat!
I had an entre of fresh nachos with tasty salsa, and a main of combination enchalada and some others. It was tasty! A little goes a long way though. The mains don't look big, but they fill you up.
All in all, a good dining experience. I'd recommend booking a table on the weekend, as it gets busy.
