Mesa Lunga

In Spain and Italy 'mesa lunga' roughly translates to 'long table'. In Adelaide it clearly means 'stylish place where fashionable people eat cool food'. The decor is a rich mix of mocha shades and dark timber, with antler chandeliers and a handsome long table standing centre stage. Tasteful flower boxes subliminally define personal dining spaces along the table but, in this convivial atmosphere, it's quite usual to share your enjoyment with your neighbours - strangers or not.

Hunker down in a comfortable leather chair to peruse the menu. Here you'll find such dishes as seared scallops with black pudding, cauliflower puree, herb and anchovy sauce; and classic paella, which sings with calasparra rice, chorizo, chicken, seafood, paprika, saffron and the spike of lemon. The pizzas are made for grown-ups, including a stunner with pork and fennel sausage, Taleggio, caramelised onions and oregano. Spanish doughnuts with chocolate dipping sauce make for a playful dessert.

For the classiest tapas in town, grab a stool in the bar area. Stuffed baby squid, white anchovies and clams should be three of your selections and a jug of sparkling sangria must always be close at hand.

terrible service
I never take the time to get around to writing reviews for restaurants but i had to do it this time. I have been to Mesa Lunga twice now and both times I found the service appalling!!! The waiting and bar staff are extremely cold and arrogant.

The food is quite good and it is a lovely setting, but time and time again I hear negative reports about the service. Such a shame.

Rude encounter
Greeted at the door by a very rude maitre'd announcing that we had to vacate our seats by 8.30pm was my first impression of this restaurant. The tapas itself - fantastic, the speed of the service - fantastic, the other wait staff - great but hearing the same maitre'd dictate to the table next to me that they would not possibly have time to eat there chosen meals also means that on principle I will never return to this restaurant and more importantly I will be bothered to write this scathing review.

Disgusted2, I'm with you. As one of the many who can only afford to dine out infrequently, our expectations of this "renowned" establishment were high.
In a nutshell, the service was poor, the food was overpriced and undersized - and they couldn't wait to move us on. Never again.

Worst dining experience ever !!
I hosted my birthday party at this venue. The matre'd was rude on the phone whilst confirming the booking, this continued once arriving at the venue.

Drinks weren't delivered as asked, meal sizes were minimal. We were pushed to order from the moment we walked in and the staff were constantly pushing us to hurry up the entire dinner. Price was excessive ($55p.h) for what was served.

Steak with no steak knives, coffee offered before dessert was even done.

Worst dining experience ever and completly ruined my evening so much so that everyone couldn't wait to exit the restaurant ASAP.

Worst dining experience ever.

Appalled

This is probably the worst restaurant I've been to in this price range. Usually I find if you're paying for a fine dining experience it's exactly what you get. Not here. It was a disaster from the moment we walked in. We were shoved to a booth at the side of the bar rather than being seated at a proper table even though we had made reservations well in advance and the restaurant area wasn't even full. The food was tasty but nothing special and the serves were pathetic. I essentially paid $35 for a deep fried cheese ball and a slice of pizza. It ruined what would have been a lovely evening had we chosen to go elsewhere.

Disappointed
My partner recently had his 30th birthday lunch here. While the food was nice, not enough was provided (@ $30 a head) after being told that food would be bought out until everyone was full. When organising the cheque at the end of the day, there was 'no record of the deposit' that we had paid two days earlier, they only reimbursed this once we provided a copy of receipt. We were also advised that they were unable to itemise the bill. Overall, the experience was not great where the service ruined what should have been a fun afternoon.

Delicious nibbles
I went there with my sister-in-law to be for a drink or two and bite to eat. The tapas selection was so delicious, we were surprised at the large serves so were quite full after only three dishes between us (with some left over). Seats outside in the lovely afternoon were perfect, soaking up the Gouger Street Sunday afternoon atmosphere.

Excellent service made the day!
The atmosphere at Mesa was great - it was warm even on a winter night, nicely lit, excellent interior decor.
The service was excellent from the moment we arrived. The team of waiters and waitresses were friendly, warm, funny and polite (even though it was quite busy that night).
The food was just average, but all the other factors made up for it. I definitely recommend it!

My partner's farewell
I had dinner for my partner's farewell and the staff were able to fit our party in.
Food was great - my party had all of the entrees available on the a la carte menu to share and each selected a main course.
Service was good - a little disappointing that service staff ended after the main meals were served. Attention to detail and a confirmation that all the meals were served correctly and making sure that all is ok on the table.
Atmosphere was beautiful - sitting in the sun on the pavement was great and the decor was great.
Overall, a great experience that I would be happy to return for another occasion at.
