Good performer, rare Chinese with a beautiful smile
After the current couple has taken over, the place has turned as one of our favorites. The lady always greets us with a smile and that's pretty rare for a Chinese restaurant.
The taste is so gentle and subtle. Some gastronomically uneducated Aussies might describe it bland and tasteless. They should go to KFC.
The chef flavours his food to minimum, which requires a lot of technique in Chinese. Compare with the cheap restaurants who use tons of MSG, salt and sauce. I always favour the Merthyr compared with the Chinatown eateries.

Merthyr Cafe
Beautiful food, great service and atmosphere like always. Lemon chicken was superb, and salted chicken and fish was great. Service was good as usual.

New Farm Chinese
I have lived in either New Farm or West End my entire adult life and I've eaten a lot of great Chinese cuisine. The food at Merthyr Cafe is atrocious. Some Chinese food is oily, the fried food (spring rolls, pork spareribs with salt and pepper) we had at Merthyr Cafe tasted it like it was cooked in a three-week-old takeaway shop fryer and then left to cool in the oil. The 'stirfry' chicken was so flavourless and nearly transparent it was so over-boiled. The fried rice had so little else except rice that it just tasted like oily white rice.

Modern Chinese
Fantastic food, service, and atmosphere, inside and out. Popular place for lunch and dinner! The hot and sour soup is delicious.
