Mercato

Mercato is the homely hub of comfort grub in the county Victorian town on Daylesford. So homely in fact that owner and chef Richard Mee says he often has trouble setting his diners off on the homeward journey.

The four dining rooms of Mercato's 1864 timber building feature comfy upholstered chairs, high ceilings and polished floorboards. The friendly staff serve simple, full-flavoured food such as kangaroo fillets and spatchcock on chargrilled polenta.

Excellent meal
The philosophy of Mercato - elegant combinations of mostly local produce - is obvious but not restictive in their menu.
The trout salad for entree (with the unusual pairing of goat's curd and nectarine) was superb - delicate and perfectly balanced. My partner's quail with roast vegetables and middle eastern flvaours was more heavy handed after the subtlty of the trout (but if I didn't have the trout to compare to, would have been the highlight of any dining experience!).
The main courses we shared: duck with gatin potato, and the special of the evening, grilled king fish with 'smashed' potatoes. Both were rich, well balanced and cooked correctly (the fish was just cooked, flakey and sweet, whilst the duck was well cooked, tender and very soft).
We shared a dessert tasting plate with a theme of cherries - ice cream, small pie and creme brulee (I think). The dessert was probably the weak point in the meal, which is disappointing given how fabulous the rest of the dining experience was. The (house made) ice cream was a standout - and so next time we will order their sorbet or ice cream dessert item rather than a tasting plate.
The service was outstanding - despite being Christmas eve, the staff were polite, attentive, unhurried and very helpful in guiding us throught the menu and wine list. The wines and liquors they matched to our meals were excellent.
The atmosphere in the dining room is lovely - the tables are spaced far enough apart to make dining for two feel intimate, and the decor is simple and classic.
A comfortable, delicious and enjoyable restaurant.
Similar in price to similar restaurants in Melbourne - about $200 for two, include ample amounts of wine and liquor (and well deserved tip).
