Behind the grand, artfully dishevelled facade of the George Hotel lies the Melbourne Wine Room, an elegant bastion of fine food and wine - once you get past the bar, that is. While the adjoining bar hums with the sounds of happy boozers knocking back fine wines, the dining room offers a more subdued and discreet haven, though one just as focused on the grape. The note-worthy wine list is matched by a selection of modern Italian cuisine - the menu benefiting from the big names involved in its creation, such as celebrity pan-rattler and MWR co-owner Karen Martini.

Gourmet Travller 2009 Australian Restaurant Guide - "Whether it's the buzzy, so-very-Melbourne front bar or the moody dining room out back, the dining experience at the George Hotel is always a joy."

great experience
My son chose the wine room to celebrate my birthday with my oldest dear friend for lunch. We were the only diners when we arrived, into the excellent annex of the wine room set up in the far corner of the bar. We were attended by wonderful waiter service, served superb food including a perfectly char grilled schnapper, and a cabbage and parmesan salad to die for. The desserts were perfect, particularly the peanut ice cream sandwich OMG. Main Course Rib Eye which my son enjoyed was excellent. entrees delightful, especially the calamari, unlike any I have ever had. This was indeed a great gift for me and I recommend it highly. So Chic and not fussy, just lovely. Other diners came ina little later, a perfect venue. loved it.

Impressive night out
I have heard alot about the restaurant so we tried it out with another couple and were impressed. The menu is small and the wine list is large. Flat Head and Barramundi mains were full of flavour and generous serves followed by quince tart, panna cotta and chocholate marquis - again something to savour. We washed this down with a couple of bottles of a Barossa grenache/shiraz/mouderve blend. The waiter was very attentive and it topped off an enjoyable eating experience that did not break the bank.
