Melba Restaurant

The gastronomic heart of the Langham, Melbourne is Melba, a restaurant with all the glamour of the diva, Dame Nellie, for which it's named. Decked out in rich tones of copper, aqua and pearl, the room resembles a grand ballroom, where a large-lunged singer belting out operatic tunes would not necessarily seem out of place. Dining-wise, the restaurant is offering a unique take on the traditional hotel buffet. Rather than putting out predictable platters of wilting food, Melba features rows of miniature kitchens where diners can stroll along, chat with the chefs and have their meals prepared on the spot. Among the options are an Indian tandoori oven, an Asian wok-and-dumpling section, a rotisserie and, of course, mountains of seafood becomingly displayed on backlit ice stands. After a meal, diners might want to snag a corner at the neighbouring Aria bar for a digestive cocktail.

Lunch with rain, hail and chocolate pudding
The great gusts of rain and hail which poured down the great Yarra River were a great backdrop to the lunch meal we shared with colleagues on 6 March 2010. The atmospherics of thunder and lightening made me and other diners hungrier than ever - thankfully with the endless hot and cold buffet at the Melba meant we had nothing to fear. With table upon table of entrees, meats, salads, Indian and Chinese cuisine plus English roast beef and all the trimmings it was a pleasant afternoon's outing. So much delicious fare that we wished we could have a second sitting for the chocolate desserts, endlessly runny custart puddings and ice cream. This lunch menu is definitely tackled on an empty stomach with plenty of time to savour the Melba's many courses of fine food for lunch.

Melba Experience
Whilst my family is not a fan of the "all you can eat" buffets, I had been told Melba has the feel and quality of a up market restaurant so we decided to try it. The restaurant is very nice and the views are great - however the food was not worth the money at all - most of it you can get from a good quality food court. The service was ok - dishes were cleared fast but the waiters always had a sense of urgency and didn't seem to like questions. The other patrons were out to get their moneys worth so they were stacking their plates up to the ceiling to try and get some value....most were hotel guests who turned up in jeans and casual t-shirts whilst we expected this to be a fancy restaurant. All up it was ok but definitely not worth the money - you can get a quality 3 course meal in any decent restaurant for that money.

Good for a big person's meal
We chose Melba to have a family birthday lunch hoping to find something for everyone. The breadth of the advertised menu was an important attractant. At $75 a head we were expecting some good quality food.

We found the quality reasonable but not great. The Indian was eaten by most of us - good, but something you would expect from any mid quality Indian restaurant. Certainly the staff have strange requests put to them - asking for pesto on the Indian bread was quite something, as the chef responded 'this is the Indian section Ma'm'.

The roast area was disappointing. The sample menu on the web boasts of beef, lamb and pork - on the day there was lamb and chicken (and a lot of chicken elsewhere).

The service was mostly good, although being pushed the wine special (4 glasses of different Tyrells' wine) when I had ordered a glass of Yarra Burn bubbly was strange.

The other clients perhaps give a hint of who comes here. A few young couples looking anxious and many tables or large people. Clearly a buffet favours eating a good size amount, but quality still matters.
