Budget-friendly Indian with flavour to spare, Mehrey da Dhaba has been a staple since it opened in 1991 for those seeking springy naan with a hearty flecking of garlic, an earthy goat curry, and smoky and tender tandoori chicken. An unassuming space behind sliding doors on Cleveland Street, Surry Hills' Mehrey da Dhaba is home to food with gradations of heat, and staff who serve with a smile beneath twirling coloured lanterns. All of this - and the silky mango lassis - urge you to come back and bring friends: You see, the more people at the table, the more of their curries you'll get to try. How you share the pappadums is up to you.

Best curries in Sydney
I'm a Pom living in Sydney, have travelled extensively in India, and come from a curry-loving family. Having tried many of East Sydney's Indian restaurants I continually return to Mehrey Da Dhaba.
What I particularly like is the diversity of the curries. Too many Indian restaurants serve brown, yellow or red curries in chicken, beef or fish. Mehrey Da Dhaba curries each offer unique flavours and presentation, all with the spicy kick I like in curries (you are always welcome to stipulate your desired heat!).
The prices are extremely reasonable and the service, while not exceptional, is always charming and competent.
I often put my reputation on the line to recommend Mehrey Da Dhaba as 'Sydney's best Indian restaurant' and I have never received disappointed feedback. The last English friend I took there, who had spent 6 months trying to find a decent curry in Sydney, was almost in tears as he gratefully consumed the several curries that covered our table.

Absolutely Indian
What a place! Absolutely the best Indian restaurant in Sydney. Very down to earth, simple, noisy, accommodating, prompt service and great food! I've been going there for the past 8 years and will keep going as long as it is still there.
